Mount Kurikoma (Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture)

TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Kurikoma is a mountain with an elevation of approximately 1,627 meters, and is one of the most representative mountains in the Tohoku region, straddling the borders of Miyagi, Iwate, and Akita prefectures. Its topography, formed by volcanic activity, alpine plants, marshes, and vibrant autumn foliage make it a popular destination for local faiths and pilgrimages since ancient times. It is the central scenic spot of Kurikoma Quasi-National Park (and the surrounding nature conservation areas), and is particularly popular for its alpine plants from spring to summer, its coolness as a summer retreat, and its beautiful autumn foliage.

Highlights

  • Autumn foliage: The entire mountain is dyed red, yellow, and orange, and the peak viewing season usually occurs between mid- and late October. The ridgeline and valleys at the foot of the mountain offer particularly good views, and are a must-see.
  • Alpine plants: From the time of remaining snow to summer, you can enjoy alpine plants and marsh flowers. The combination of the remaining snow and flowers in early spring is also attractive.
  • Mountain scenery and views: From the ridgeline you can see the surrounding mountains and plains, and if the weather is good you can even see distant mountain ranges and the Sea of Japan.
  • Hot Springs: There are hot springs scattered around the foot of the mountain (therapeutic spas for after climbing) where you can soothe your fatigue from the climb.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • The nearest major station is Kurikoma Kogen Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen line, which is easily accessible (from there you can take a car or bus to the trailhead).
  • Public transportation: Depending on the season, regular and special buses may operate to the trailhead and surrounding tourist spots. Please check the operating times and periods in advance.
  • By car: Access via the Tohoku Expressway and drive up to the trailhead (there is a parking lot, but it often fills up during the autumn foliage season). The estimated drive time from Sendai is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (varies depending on the starting point).
  • Climbing Route: There are multiple routes, and the time and difficulty will vary depending on the trailhead. Please check the map and route information in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip to the summit and back: It depends on the route, but it usually takes 2-4 hours to climb and 1.5-3 hours to descend (3-7 hours round trip).
  • Walking around the area + using the hot springs: If you are mainly sightseeing and do not include mountain climbing, this will take half a day to a full day.
  • If you want to enjoy it at a leisurely pace: We recommend staying one to two nights, hiking, sightseeing in the surrounding area, and visiting hot springs.

Nearby spots

  • Kurikoma Plateau (a scenic spot at the foot of the mountain, especially famous for its autumn foliage)
  • Nearby hot springs (therapeutic hot springs and day-trip hot springs near the trailhead)
  • Local roadside stations and farm shops (where you can purchase local agricultural products and specialties)
  • Nearby valleys and observation decks (tourist spots that can be reached by car)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Weather changes: The weather can suddenly worsen due to the elevation change. Please be sure to bring rainwear, warm clothing, and snacks.
  • Climbing equipment: Some routes have slippery sections and steep slopes. Please bring hiking boots, a map and compass (or GPS), a headlamp, and equipment appropriate to your level of experience.
  • Autumn Crowds: The autumn foliage season (around October) is particularly busy on weekends and holidays. To avoid full parking lots and traffic jams, please consider leaving early and using public transportation.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: To protect alpine plants and the scenery, please avoid picking or trampling on them, and be sure to take your trash with you. Please stay on the hiking trails.
  • Winter dangers: In winter, conditions can be severe due to snow and ice. Experience in snowy mountains and equipment such as crampons and ice axes are essential. Please avoid unreasonable attempts to enter the mountain.
  • Check the information: Please check the latest road conditions, weather information, and hiking trail access information (such as falling rocks, construction, seasonal closures, etc.) in advance.

*The specific travel times and bus schedules for each route, as well as the latest mountain climbing regulations and volcano information, are subject to change. Please be sure to check the official information from local governments, tourist associations, and the information center at the trailhead before setting off.
