Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Matsusaka Castle is a castle ruin in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture, dating back to a castle built at the end of the Sengoku period. It is deeply connected to the development of the castle town of Matsusaka, and is characterized by the remaining remains of stone walls, moats, and enclosures. During the Edo period, it served as the domain's administrative headquarters, and was abandoned after the Meiji Restoration. Today, it has been developed as the Matsusaka Castle Ruins (Joyama Park), and is popular with locals and tourists as a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, as well as for strolling and viewing historical sites. The castle ruins offer views of the city and surrounding area, and the appeal is that you can enjoy the changing seasons of nature while immersing yourself in history.

Highlights

  • Stone walls and moat remains: The remains of stone walls, dry moats, and earthworks that tell the story of the castle's former territorial layout remain in good condition. You can observe the castle's structure.
  • Remains of the Honmaru and Ninomaru: The elevation differences and layout of the baileys give a real sense of the castle's defensive structure and excellent views.
  • Cherry Blossom Row (Spring): The area around Shiroyama Park is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and is bustling with visitors in the spring. The cherry blossoms are sometimes lit up at night (please check to see if they are on).
  • Autumn foliage: In autumn, the autumn leaves of maples and other trees turn beautiful colors, making it a great photo spot.
  • Historical site information boards and explanatory panels: These panels explain the history of the castle and its remains, allowing you to learn as you stroll around.
  • Observation spot: You can get a panoramic view of Matsusaka cityscape from near the Honmaru, and on clear days you can also enjoy the distant view.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train: Get off at JR or Kintetsu Matsusaka Station. You can walk towards Shiroyama from the station, but please allow 20-30 minutes for the walk as it is an uphill climb.
  • Bus: Take the Matsusaka City Loop Bus or a local bus and get off at a nearby bus stop such as "Matsusaka Castle Ruins" (check the route and number of buses in advance).
  • Taxi: Approximately 5 to 10 minutes (approximately from the station).
  • By car: Approximately 10-20 minutes from Matsusaka Interchange on the Ise Expressway (depending on road conditions). Parking is available around Shiroyama Park, but the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend arriving early during peak seasons.

  • Thorough tour (including reading the historical site explanation, viewing the view, and taking photos): 1-2 hours
  • Sightseeing including nearby museums, merchant towns, and Matsusaka beef meals: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Footing and Clothing: The castle ruins have slopes, stairs, and unpaved areas. We recommend wearing comfortable footwear. Please be careful when it rains as the grounds can be slippery.
  • Manners: Historic sites are cultural assets. Please observe basic manners, such as not entering restricted areas, taking your trash with you, and not damaging plants or stone walls.
  • Pets: Please check whether you are allowed to bring dogs into the park and the rules (keeping them on a leash, disposing of waste, etc.) before proceeding.
  • Photography/Drones: The use of drones is often prohibited or restricted. Please avoid using drones without permission and be considerate of local residents and other visitors.
  • Check facility information: Please check the official website of Matsusaka City and related facilities in advance for opening hours, parking availability, event information, etc.
