overview

Matsushima is a scenic spot dotted with over 200 islands of various sizes in Matsushima Bay, and is counted as one of the "Three Most Viewed Places in Japan." The serene scenery created by the sea and pine trees changes with each season, and can be enjoyed up close on a sightseeing boat or by strolling along the bay.

Highlights

  • Take a sightseeing boat tour of Matsushima Bay to enjoy the spectacular views (cruise takes approximately 30-50 minutes)
  • The historical architecture and gardens of Zuiganji Temple, a national treasure
  • Panoramic view of the sea and islands from Godaido
  • A coastal street where you can enjoy seafood and local souvenirs

access

From Sendai Station, take the JR Senseki Line to Matsushima-Kaigan Station (approximately 30-40 minutes). By car, take the Tohoku Expressway, Rifu Junction, and then the Sendai Tobu Road to Matsushima Kaigan (approximately 40 minutes). Pleasure boats depart from the port.

Estimated stay

Half a day to a full day. The sightseeing boat and a visit to Zuiganji Temple take 2 to 4 hours, and if you add meals and the museum, a full day is recommended.

Nearby spots

  • Zuiganji Temple (Matsushima Town)
  • Godaido (Matsushima Town)
  • Matsushima Bay sightseeing boats (various companies)

Points to note

It tends to get crowded during tourist season and holidays, and the boat may be suspended due to weather. There are days when the sea breeze is strong, so please dress warmly and be careful of your footing. Please also observe proper etiquette when visiting temples and shrines.
