Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Matsuyama Castle is a flatland castle built on Katsuyama (approximately 132m above sea level) in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, and is a famous castle whose castle walls, which were developed during the Edo period, remain in good condition. Construction of the castle began after the Battle of Sekigahara by Kato Yoshiaki and others, and after completion, the castle underwent expansions and renovations by feudal lords to reach its current appearance. The castle tower (the main building of the main citadel) is one of the remaining castle towers, and is a valuable relic that conveys Edo period architecture to the present day.
The castle is located on top of a mountain, so its greatest attraction is the panoramic view of Matsuyama city and the Seto Inland Sea. In addition to the structural beauty of its stone walls, various gates, and turrets, the scenery that changes with the seasons (cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves in autumn) attracts visitors.
Highlights
- Castle tower (honmaru): One of the remaining castle towers. Inside there are exhibits and a structure that you can walk up, and the view from the top floor is spectacular.
 - Stone wall (Musha-hashiri/stone wall): Sturdy stone walls remain in various places, giving a sense of the castle's defensive structure and technology.
 - Honmaru and Ninomaru buildings: Historical buildings such as gates, turrets and gardens are scattered around the area, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of the time while strolling around.
 - Viewing spots: You can enjoy a panoramic view of Matsuyama city, the Seto Inland Sea, and even the islands depending on the weather.
 - Seasonal Events: It is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, and is sometimes lit up at night (please check the dates).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Train + Tram/Bus: From JR Matsuyama Station or Iyotetsu (Matsuyamashi Station), take the tram or bus to the city center (towards Okaido and Otemachi). From there, the castle ropeway station is within walking distance (please search for detailed transfer and stop information for your route).
