Sapporo TV Tower (Sapporo, Hokkaido)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sapporo TV Tower is a landmark tower that stands at the eastern edge of Odori Park in the center of Sapporo, and was completed in 1957 (Showa 32). It was designed by engineers (Naito Tanaka and others) known for their tower architecture at the time, and stands approximately 147.2 meters above ground, with the observation deck at a height of approximately 90 meters. It is a popular photo spot for tourists and locals alike, as it offers a panoramic view of the grid-like cityscape of the city, Odori Park in all four seasons, and the mountains in the distance. It is lit up at night, making it a symbol of Sapporo's night view.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view from the observation deck: Odori Park, central Sapporo, Mt. Moiwa and other distant mountains on clear days, and beautiful snowscapes in winter. The transition from dusk to night view (magic hour) is especially recommended.
  • Odori Park's seasonal scenery: The cherry blossoms, greenery, autumn leaves, and snow festival venue can be seen from the observation deck.
  • Illumination of the tower: The tower is lit up according to the season and events, and becomes a great photo spot at night.
  • Shops and Information in the Building: In addition to souvenir shops, there is also a tourist information counter, making it a convenient starting point for sightseeing in Sapporo.
  • View during events: During the Sapporo Snow Festival in February, you can see the scale of the venue from above.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: A short walk from Odori Station (east end). Sapporo Municipal Subway (Namboku Line, Tozai Line, Toho Line) is available.
  • From JR Sapporo Station: Approximately 15-20 minutes on foot, or one subway stop (Sapporo Station → Odori Station).
  • Buses and trams: You can also use the circular buses that run through the city center and taxis. In winter, travel times vary depending on road conditions, so please allow plenty of time for your trip.
  • By car: Paid parking is available in the area. However, the area around Odori Park can get crowded, and traffic restrictions may be in place during events.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • View only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including viewing, photography, and souvenir shopping)
  • For leisurely sightseeing: 1-2 hours (including a stroll around Odori Park and other nearby spots)
  • During events (such as the Snow Festival): Half a day to a full day if you combine it with a tour of the venue

Nearby spots

  • Odori Park: Perfect for seasonal events, flower beds, and strolls.
  • Sapporo Snow Festival Venue (February, Odori Venue): You can get a panoramic view of the venue from the tower.
  • Sapporo Clock Tower: Within walking distance, an old Sapporo landmark.
  • Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Building): Historic architecture and gardens.
  • Susukino: Close to the dining district and the nightlife district, making it convenient for dining and enjoying the night view.
  • Tanukikoji Shopping Street: A shopping street where you can enjoy shopping and gourmet food.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded during Golden Week, the summer tourist season, the winter season from December to February, and especially during the Snow Festival in February. There may be waiting times for the observation deck and restrictions on entry, so please allow plenty of time to visit.
  • Weather: The view is dependent on the weather. Cloudy or snowy days can make it difficult to see the scenery, so it's best to go on a day when the forecast calls for clear skies. The observation deck may be temporarily closed due to strong winds or bad weather.
  • Clothing: It is very cold in winter, and the observation deck and surrounding area can be windy, so be sure to take precautions against the cold. Even in summer, it is a good idea to bring a jacket on breezy days.
  • Manners: When taking photos or viewing the scenery at the observation deck or Odori Park, please be considerate of other visitors. Please dispose of trash in designated areas, and consult with staff if you are using a stroller or wheelchair.
  • Barrier-free: The building is equipped with elevators and wheelchair-accessible facilities, but we recommend checking the official website or the facility in advance for details.
  • Admission fees and opening hours are subject to change, so please check the official website for the latest information before visiting.

(Note) This is one of the classic tourist spots in Sapporo, so you can enjoy better photos and views by choosing the time of day and the season. We especially recommend visiting in the evening or at night.
