Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Arisugawa Memorial Park is a metropolitan park located near the border between Minami-Azabu and Shirokanedai in Minato Ward, Tokyo. Originally the site of the residence of Prince Arisugawa (a member of the imperial family), it was opened to the public after the war, making use of the gardens and woodland that were developed during the Meiji and Taisho periods. It is beloved as an "urban oasis" where you can experience the natural undulations and waterscapes in the city, and features a well-balanced arrangement of ponds, small streams, groves, plazas, and playground equipment.

Its distinctive feature is that, despite being in the heart of the city, it has quiet walking paths lined with trees and seasonal flowers (plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, azaleas, etc.) that you can enjoy. The surrounding area is also home to many embassies and upscale residential areas, creating a tranquil atmosphere that is perfect for a wide range of uses, including strolling, photography, children's play, reading, and picnics.

Highlights

  • Ponds and streams: The small ponds and streams in the garden reflect the scenery of the four seasons and have a tranquil atmosphere. The waterside scenery is also great for taking photos.
  • Walking path through the woods: The path shaded by tall trees is cool even in summer and perfect for a walk. You can enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms in spring and fallen leaves in winter.
  • Children's playground and play equipment: There are playgrounds and playgrounds for small children, making it popular with families.
  • Grass space: This is a rare grassy area in the city center, perfect for a break or a light picnic (although be careful about finding a spot when it's crowded).
  • Seasonal flowers: There are seasonal attractions such as plum and cherry blossoms, fresh greenery in early summer, and autumn leaves. The cherry blossom season is especially enjoyable when combined with a stroll around the surrounding area.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Within walking distance of Hiroo Station or Ebisu Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. Hiroo Station is particularly close, about a 7-10 minute walk (depending on the entrance).
  • Other nearby stations: Hiroo Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and Shirokane Takanawa and Shirokanedai Stations on the Toei Subway and Tokyo Metro are also within walking distance, but the route to the entrance and the travel time will vary depending on the station.
  • Bus: It is also convenient to take the Toei bus and get off at a nearby bus stop. Please check the bus route and schedule in advance.
  • By car: Parking is limited in the surrounding area, with many residential areas and embassies, so we recommend using public transportation. If you use a nearby paid parking lot, be aware that it may be full.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walk: 30-45 minutes (about one lap around the park)
  • Relaxed: 1-2 hours (including leisurely reading, picnicking, and photography)
  • If you are traveling with children or taking breaks at nearby cafes, it would be a good idea to spend about half a day there.

Nearby spots

  • Cafes and restaurants in the Hiroo area: There are many stylish restaurants and import food stores, making it a convenient place to eat after a stroll.
  • Yebisu Garden Place: A shopping complex within walking distance or a short bus or taxi ride away, it houses an observation deck, art museum, and restaurants.
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum and Former Residence of Prince Asaka (slightly within walking distance/towards Shirokanedai): A spot where you can enjoy the Western-style building and gardens (check opening days in advance).
  • Foreign embassy area: The surrounding area is dotted with embassies and quiet residential areas, making it a fun place to walk around.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The number of visitors increases during cherry blossom season and on weekends. Please be considerate of others when reserving a spot on the lawn or occupying it for a long period of time.
  • Manners: The park is a public space. Please be sure to take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated areas. Barbecues, the use of fire, and entering flower beds and plantings may be prohibited.
  • Pets: Some parks allow pets, but please be sure to follow proper etiquette, such as keeping them on a leash and cleaning up their droppings. Some rules can be difficult to find, so be sure to check the park notices beforehand.
  • Opening hours and facility usage: The opening hours of the park itself, the management office, tennis courts, etc. may vary. If you wish to use a specific facility, please check the official information.
  • Weather and Season: The ground may become muddy during the rainy season and typhoons. In winter, the trees lose their leaves, opening up the view, but be sure to take precautions against the cold. The best time to see the flowers varies from year to year.

Note: We recommend checking the latest opening information (temporary closures, construction work, events, etc.) on the official websites of Minato Ward and Tokyo Metropolitan Government, as well as on-site information boards, before visiting.
