Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Mogami River Boat Trip (Tozawa Village, Yamagata Prefecture) is a traditional tourist boat ride that allows you to enjoy the scenery of Yamagata's most famous river, the Mogami River, up close. The experience of traveling down the Mogami River, which was a major artery for transporting goods during the Edo period, on a traditional boat allows you to experience both natural beauty and history at the same time. As symbolized by the famous haiku by Matsuo Basho, "The May rains gather quickly, the Mogami River," the river is also linked to literature and culture, and you can enjoy the rapids of the valley, the strangely shaped rocks, and the changing scenery of the seasons (fresh greenery, cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and snowscapes) from the boat.
Highlights
- The beauty of the valley and strange rock formations: The scenery is lined with sheer cliffs and large and small rocks. The view from the river is in a class of its own when compared to the view from land.
- Seasonal expressions: You can enjoy completely different scenery depending on the season you visit, such as the budding buds of spring, the fresh greenery of early summer, the autumn leaves, and the snowy scenery of winter.
- Places associated with Basho: The boatman often introduces spots and provides explanations related to the haiku of the master haiku poet Matsuo Basho, allowing you to learn about the cultural background.
- Boatman's narration and boat-handling techniques: Enjoy a tour guided tour by a local boatman (explaining history and nature) and the fun of seeing traditional boat-handling techniques up close.
- Bird and nature observation: Early mornings and quiet times are ideal for observing wild birds and aquatic life.
