Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Soni Plateau is a grassland area in Soni Village, Uda District, Nara Prefecture, known nationwide for its autumn landscape of spreading silver grass (pampas grass). The majestic landscape, woven with gentle hills and grasslands, is set against the backdrop of a natural environment that has long been used for grazing and grassland use in the local area, and shows different faces in each season. In particular, the silver silver grass illuminated by the setting sun is a tourist highlight in autumn, and the area is bustling with photography enthusiasts and hikers.

Highlights

  • Japanese pampas grass field (best time to see: mid-October to early November) — The silver waves that spread across the hills are a sight to behold.
  • Observation point — Enjoy a 360-degree view from the ridges and hills of the plateau. It's even more magical on days when a sea of clouds appears.
  • Trekking Courses - There are grassland walking trails and hiking routes into the surrounding mountains, and you can go for anything from a light stroll to serious mountain climbing.
  • Sunsets and stargazing — The clear air makes for beautiful sunsets and starry skies. We recommend taking photos in the evening.
  • Local events - During the pampas grass season, local illuminations and special events may be held (this varies from year to year).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus/Taxi: The nearest major stations are Kintetsu Nabari Station and Haibara Station. From these stations, you can access Soni Village by local bus, seasonal shuttle, or taxi. Bus services may increase during the peak season for Japanese pampas grass.
  • By car: From Osaka or Nagoya, take the expressway and travel via national and prefectural roads for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (depending on the starting point and traffic conditions). Parking is available at the entrance to the plateau and at the tourist parking lot, but may be full during busy times.
  • Note: Public transportation is limited, so please check the service status in advance, especially on weekdays and in the early morning and evening. Also, special buses may run during the silver grass season.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walk: 1-2 hours (enough to walk around the grassland and take photos)
  • A leisurely stroll and easy hike: 3-4 hours (visiting viewpoints and multiple walking trails)
  • Day trip including hot springs and meals: Half day to 1 day
  • If you want to take photos or just enjoy the view, you should reserve half a day to a full day, including the time before and after sunset.

Nearby spots

  • Soni Kogen Onsen "Okame no Yu" — A day-trip hot spring facility perfect for stopping by after a hike or stroll (please check opening hours and closing days).
  • Byobuiwa (surrounding strange rock formations and observation spots) — A place where you can enjoy natural rock walls and varied landscapes.
  • Nearby hiking trails — There are several hiking routes leading to nearby mountains and ridges, perfect for nature walks.
  • Local restaurants and guesthouses — Enjoy local mountain village cuisine and stay overnight at a guesthouse (advance reservations required).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The peak season for viewing the Japanese pampas grass (autumn weekends and public holidays) can be extremely busy. The parking lot fills up quickly, so we recommend arriving early in the morning or visiting on a weekday.
  • Transportation: Public transportation is infrequent, so please check the return bus or taxi schedule in advance. Parking on the street or stopping in an unnatural way will cause inconvenience to the local community.
  • Clothing and equipment: The highlands can be windy and cold, so please bring appropriate winter clothing and comfortable shoes for the season. The terrain can be slippery in rainy weather.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: There may be restricted areas within the grasslands. Collecting plants and handling fire are strictly prohibited. Please be sure to take your trash with you and follow local rules.
  • Seasonal precautions: Take precautions against insects (mosquitoes and ticks) in summer, and be careful of frozen roads in winter. The best time to see the Japanese pampas grass varies from year to year, so be sure to check the latest information on flowering and best viewing times.

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the latest access, parking, and event information on the Soni Village Tourism Association, the official website, and local transportation information. Enjoy the beautiful grassland scenery.
