Hinomisaki Lighthouse (Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a chalk-white lighthouse located in Hinomisaki, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. It is a popular tourist spot offering a magnificent panoramic view of the cliffs jutting out into the sea and the Sea of Japan. Built during the Meiji period, it is known for its imposing appearance and height (approximately 43.6m), making it one of the tallest lighthouses in Japan. Combined with the surrounding rugged scenery, the lighthouse offers beautiful evening and morning views, making it a popular spot for photography and strolls.
Highlights
- Lighthouse exterior: The beautiful white tower stands out against the seascape, making for a spectacular view when photographed from up close or overlooking the ocean beyond the lighthouse.
- View: A nearly 360-degree panorama from the observation deck around the lighthouse. On clear days, you can see all the way to the horizon, and the sunset is especially beautiful.
- Inside the lighthouse (if open to the public): You can often climb the spiral staircase to the observation deck at the top, where you can enjoy a view close to the sea level and the scenery from a high vantage point (we recommend checking opening hours and admission fees in advance).
- Hinomisaki Shrine and surrounding coast: There is an old shrine (a place dedicated to the guardian deity of the sea) near the lighthouse, so you can enjoy the cultural aspect by taking a stroll there in addition to visiting the lighthouse.
- Sea cliffs and reefs: The scenery created by the rough waves and the appearance of the rocky shore are dynamic and ideal for nature observation.
