Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Cape Hyuga, a cape facing the Pacific Ocean that juts out from the eastern edge of Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a popular tourist destination with its magnificent seascape and sheer cliffs. The coast has long been used as a landmark for ships and a fishing base, and the rock faces and oddly shaped rocks eroded by rough waves, as well as the horizon visible from the tip of the cape, are popular among photography enthusiasts. As it is located in a position where the sun rises over the sea, it is also known as a sunrise spot. The surrounding area still retains the atmosphere of the sea and port town, allowing visitors to experience not only the coastal scenery but also the local lifestyle and history.
Highlights
- Panoramic view of cliffs and sea: A magnificent view from the tip of the cape. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the horizon, making it perfect for taking sunrise photos.
- Strange rock formations and rocky landscapes: Dynamic terrain continues, including rocks carved by the waves and sea caves (we recommend observing from observation points with fences).
- Umagase (local attraction): A place with a long, narrow rock outcrop and an observation deck. It is a popular photo spot with thrilling scenery (follow the on-site guide to see the sights).
- Lighthouse, small port, and fishing village scenery: Around the cape, there is a lighthouse, a fishing port, and the atmosphere of a historic port town. Take a stroll and enjoy the local atmosphere.
- Bird and marine life viewing: Depending on the season, you may be able to see migratory birds and seabirds, and if you're lucky, you may even be able to see whales offshore from winter to spring (although this is not guaranteed).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Nippo Main Line "Hyuga City Station" (center of Hyuga City).
- Public transportation: There are often few buses from the station to the cape, so please check the timetable in advance. If there is a bus running, you can walk from the bus stop to the observation point on the cape.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Safety first: Cliffs and rocky areas are slippery and there are areas where entry is prohibited. Follow the instructions on fences and signs and stay away from dangerous areas. Be especially careful if you are traveling with small children.
- Weather and wave effects: On rough sea days, high waves and strong winds are more likely to occur, making it dangerous. Do not force your way down to the coast in bad weather. Be especially careful during typhoon season (summer to autumn).
- Crowds: It gets crowded on weekends and holidays, especially around sunrise and sunset. The parking lot may fill up during peak hours, so we recommend arriving early.
- Marine life observation etiquette: Collecting plants or shells from the coast or rocky areas may be prohibited for environmental conservation reasons. Please check before taking them home.
- Clothing and equipment: The area around the cape is often subject to strong sunlight and wind, so be sure to bring a hat, windproof and warm clothing, and comfortable shoes. Also, if you're aiming for sunrise, you'll be traveling in the dark, so it's a good idea to bring a flashlight.
- Check your transportation options in advance: Buses run only a limited number of times, so if you're using public transportation, check the timetable in advance. If you're using a rental car or taxi, it's a good idea to check your return transportation options as well.
