Tochigi Prefecture
September 26, 2025September 30, 2025

overview

This shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, and is characterized by its gorgeous carvings and richly colored shrine buildings. It is a popular spot visited by both domestic and international visitors as the center of the World Heritage Site, "Nikko Shrines and Temples."

Highlights

  • Yomeimon Gate: Intricate carvings and the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" sign
  • Sleeping Cat: A small statue of a prayer for peace
  • Shrine and temple buildings such as the five-story pagoda and Taiyuin Temple

access

It's about a 10-15 minute bus ride or a 25 minute walk from JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station. Public transport can be crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons.

Estimated stay

It takes 2-3 hours to visit the temple grounds and stroll around the surrounding area. If you want to visit the museum and surrounding shrines and temples, it's a good idea to set aside about half a day.

Nearby spots

  • Futarasan Shrine (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture)
  • Rinno-ji Temple (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture)
  • Kegon Falls (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, near Lake Chuzenji)

Points to note

As it is a popular tourist destination, it is relatively quiet in the early morning and evening. In winter, the ground can be slippery due to ice and snow, so please bring warm clothes and comfortable walking shoes.
