Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Niijima is one of the inhabited islands in Niijima Village, Tokyo, located in the northern part of the Izu Islands. The island was formed by volcanic activity and is attractive for its fine white sand beaches, rich marine environment, and laid-back island lifestyle. White sand beaches such as Habushiura in particular have high transparency and are popular for surfing, swimming, and snorkeling. Local industries include fishing and traditional crafts (such as Niijima glass), and the island is characterized by its ability to combine tourism with craft experiences.

Highlights

  • Habushiura Beach: The island's signature large sandy beach. The contrast between the white sand and the blue sea is beautiful, and it's also famous as a surfing spot. Recommended for walks and photography.
  • Surfing and marine activitiesThere are spots for beginners to advanced divers, and there are plenty of schools and rentals available during the season. You can also enjoy snorkeling and fishing.
  • Niijima Glass (Glass Workshop/Experience): One of the island's specialties, there is a workshop where you can experience glassblowing and accessory making (advance reservations recommended).
  • Island driving and cycling: The views from the coast and hills are great, and you can leisurely explore the island's natural beauty and villages. It's convenient to get around by rental car or bicycle.
  • Local cuisine and village walks: It is also picturesque to sample the island's seafood at restaurants around the fishing port, or to gaze upon the village's alleyways and fishing equipment.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Ships (liners and high-speed ships): Tokai Kisen and other companies operate regular jet boats (high-speed boats) and large ships from Tokyo's Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal (Takeshiba Pier). Travel times vary depending on the boat, so please check the timetable in advance. There are also boats from ports on the Izu Peninsula side, such as Atami and Shimoda.
  • Plane (scheduled flight): There are regular flights from Chofu Airport (Chofu City, Tokyo) operated by New Central Airlines and others, allowing for quick access to the island. Please note that flights are prone to cancellations and adjustments due to weather.
  • Island Transportation: Travel from the port and airport areas to major tourist destinations by local bus, taxi, car rental, or bicycle. Please consider your physical strength when using a bicycle as the route is hilly.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: Possible, but it can be hectic due to time constraints on transportation (boat and plane). Just enjoy a stroll around the main beach and lunch.
  • 1-2 nights: A standard plan that includes the beach, glass making, and leisurely strolls around the island. You can enjoy the sunset, morning ocean, and stargazing.
  • 2 nights or more: Recommended if you plan to surf, dive, or tour multiple remote islands (such as Shikinejima).

Nearby spots

  • Shikinejima: This island is located near Niijima and offers hot springs and activities on the beach. Day trips and overnight stays are popular.
  • Other Izu Islands (Oshima, Kozushima, etc.): It is also possible to travel around the area by boat. Please plan accordingly, taking into consideration the season and the number of boats.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds and reservations: Tourists flock to the area during the summer (July to August) and during long weekends, so you'll need to make reservations for accommodation and marine activities well in advance. Ferries and flights also tend to fill up quickly.
  • Weather and flight cancellation risks: During typhoon season (mainly summer to autumn) and bad weather, ships and planes may be canceled or delayed. Please allow ample time for your travel plans and check flight information frequently.
  • Maritime Safety: Depending on the location, swimming areas and surf zones may have strong waves and rip currents. Many areas have part-time lifeguards, so avoid extreme swimming in the ocean and, if necessary, be accompanied by a school or instructor.
  • Garbage and Environmental Conservation: As the island has limited waste disposal capacity, please take your trash home with you or follow the designated rules for separating it. Please refrain from any actions that harm the environment (such as collecting plants or capturing living creatures).
  • Cash and store hours: Commercial facilities and ATMs on the island are limited, so it's a good idea to bring some cash with you. Restaurants and shops may have short opening hours.
  • Consideration for local residents:Please be quiet in residential areas and around fishing ports, and nuisance parking and leaving trash on the street are strictly prohibited. Please check the rules when using drones, etc.
  • What to wear and what to bring: It is a good idea to bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen), shoes for playing in the sea, insect repellent, essential medicines, and rain gear (in case of sudden changes in weather).

---

When planning your trip, please check the latest flight and accommodation information and local tourist guides (such as the Niijima Village Tourist Association). If necessary, we can also suggest seasonal recommendations (such as beach-focused summer trips, cycling and walking in spring and autumn, etc.). What kind of trip are you thinking of?
