Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo)

[Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)]
Shinjuku Gyoen is a large urban park and garden located in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. The vast grounds, covering approximately 58 hectares, feature a harmonious layout of three garden styles: a Japanese garden, an English landscape garden, and a French formal garden. Originating from land that was part of a feudal lord's residence during the Edo period, it was developed as a garden for the Imperial family during the Meiji period. After the war, it was opened to the public as a national park, and is beloved as a place where you can quietly enjoy nature throughout the seasons, even in the heart of the city. Particularly popular attractions include the cherry blossoms in spring, the autumn leaves, the spacious lawns, and the greenhouse (large greenhouse).

[Highlights]
– Cherry blossoms (cherry blossom viewing spot)
– The park is planted with a variety of cherry blossoms, including Somei Yoshino, and when they bloom, the park is enveloped in the pink of cherry blossoms. It can get crowded, but the park is large and there are plenty of places to relax and enjoy the view.
– Japanese garden
– An authentic Japanese garden with a pond, waterfall, and teahouse. Enjoy the charming scenery and changing seasons.
– English landscape garden
– The natural scenery, consisting of a wide lawn, gentle hills, and forests, is a great place for picnics and strolls (food and drink are allowed, but please observe good manners).
– French formal garden
– Geometrically arranged flower beds and tree-lined paths create a beautiful area that enhances the garden's landscape.
– Large greenhouse
– A greenhouse displaying tropical and subtropical plants. A great spot for rainy days and cold seasons.
– Seasonal plants
- You can enjoy a variety of scenery throughout the year, including spring (cherry blossoms), fresh greenery, summer forests, autumn leaves, and winter leaves after they have fallen.

[Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)]
– Nearest station (approximate walking distance)
- Shinjuku-gyoenmae Station (Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line)...approximately 1-3 minutes walk (close to Shinjuku Gate)
- Shinjuku-sanchome Station (Tokyo Metro/Toei Subway)...approximately 5 minutes walk
- JR Shinjuku Station (all JR lines)...approximately 10-15 minutes walk (distance depends on the exit)
- Accessible on foot from Sendagaya, Shinanomachi, and Yoyogi stations (travel time varies depending on the entrance gate)
– Bus/Car
- Take the local bus and get off at the nearest stop. There is almost no parking on the premises, so it is common to use the nearby paid parking lots. As it is in the city center, we recommend using public transportation.
– Note
– You can enter the park through various gates (Shinjuku Gate, Okido Gate, Sendagaya Gate, etc.). Please check the official website for opening times and entrances before visiting.

[Estimated stay (estimated time required)]
- Short walks: 30 minutes to 1 hour (while passing by)
– Walking around and taking photos: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
– Relaxing with picnic and greenhouse visits: Half a day (3-4 hours)
– Seasonal events (such as cherry blossom viewing) can be crowded, so we recommend arriving early to allow plenty of time.

[Nearby spots]
– Shinjuku area (skyscrapers, Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observation deck, shopping, restaurants)
– Hanazono Shrine (Shinjuku, famous for its fairs and festivals)
– Harajuku, Omotesando, Yoyogi Park (accessible by foot or train)
– National Stadium (New stadium, Sendagaya area)
– Cafes and restaurants around Shinjuku Gyoen (convenient for a break after a walk)

[Points to note (crowds, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)]
– Crowded
– It gets very crowded during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, and on holidays. If you want to take your time looking around, we recommend going on a weekday or early in the morning right after opening.
- Manners
– Please take your trash with you or put it in the designated trash can. Do not damage flowers or plants. Please be considerate to other users by not running around or making noise.
– Drinking alcohol and barbecues may be restricted by the park's rules (even if you are allowed to bring in food and drink, please do so in moderation). Pets (dogs, etc.) are generally not allowed in the park. Assistance dogs (guide dogs, etc.) are an exception.
– In principle, the use of bicycles, skateboards, drones, etc. is prohibited.
– Smoking is permitted only in designated areas. Please check in advance as smoking may be prohibited throughout the park.
– Safety/Clothing
– In summer, the sun will be strong, so bring a hat and stay hydrated. In winter, the wind will be cold, so dress warmly.
– You can still enjoy the greenhouse and some of the scenery even in rainy weather, but be careful as the ground can be slippery.
