Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Haraizawa Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Hinohara Village, Nishitama District, Tokyo. The mountain stream flows beautifully over the rocks in multiple tiers, and the area is surrounded by deep forest, making it popular as a "hidden place near the city." The waterfall falls in several tiers, and its appearance changes with the seasons. The fresh greenery, autumn leaves, snowy scenery, and icicles seen in winter are particularly attractive, making it a favorite among photography enthusiasts and hikers.

Highlights

  • View in front of the waterfall: You can see the waterfall with multiple tiers up close. You can enjoy the sound of the water and the tranquility of the forest.
  • The changing seasons: the fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing coolness of summer, the colorful leaves of autumn, and the frozen landscape of winter - each offers a charming look. The partial freezing of the landscape in winter is especially popular as a photo spot.
  • Walking trails: Enjoy the changing scenery of the stream and forest while walking along the footpath to the waterfall and the surrounding trails. There are also recommended spots to view the waterfall and take a rest along the way.
  • Surrounding Satoyama scenery: There are traditional houses, souvenir shops, and local restaurants in Hinohara Village, so you can enjoy the Satoyama atmosphere while viewing the waterfall.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus: Get off at Musashi-Itsukaichi Station on the JR Itsukaichi Line. From the station, take the Nishitokyo Bus (bound for Hossawa-no-Taki Iriguchi) and get off at the last stop or at Hossawa-no-Taki Iriguchi (approximately 30-40 minutes). Buses run infrequently, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: From the city center, it takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours via the Chuo Expressway and Ken-O Expressway (depending on traffic conditions). There is a parking lot near the waterfall, but the number of spaces is limited and it gets crowded on weekends and holidays.
  • Walking: From the bus stop (Hossawa Falls Entrance) to the waterfall, it's about a 10-20 minute walk along the well-maintained footpath. There are slopes and stairs, so it's best to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Viewing the waterfall only: Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour, including the round trip walk.
  • Walking around and stopping by nearby cafes and shops: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Hiking in the area and touring multiple spots (half to full day): If you combine hiking in the area with hiking in Mt. Mito or Akigawa Valley, you can make a half to full day course.

Nearby spots

  • Akigawa Valley: A scenic spot along a mountain stream with walking trails and spots to play in the river (approximately 20-30 minutes by car, depending on traffic).
  • Mt. Mito (climbing): A hiking area rich in nature. There is a trailhead and trekking courses, making it popular for day hikes (about 30 minutes by car).
  • Hinode Village's rural mountain scenery and local facilities: The village is dotted with local museums, local direct sales outlets, and restaurants, which you can stop by after viewing the waterfall.
  • Okutama area (Lake Okutama, etc.): You can also visit tourist spots in Okutama by car.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Traffic and Crowds: The number of visitors increases on weekends, holidays, and during the autumn foliage season, so parking lots and buses can become crowded. If you are using public transportation, we recommend checking the bus timetable in advance, and if you are driving, we recommend arriving early.
  • Safety precautions: The walking paths are well maintained, but they can be slippery in rainy weather and winter. Be sure to wear non-slip shoes and bring warm, waterproof gear.
  • Winter ice: It's a spectacular sight, but please do not get too close to the falls due to the risk of ice and falling rocks. It is dangerous to stand on the ice.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please be sure to take your trash with you, and refrain from using fires or collecting plants outside of designated areas. Please be considerate of wild animals and vegetation.
  • Drones and other equipment: Flying drones without permission is often prohibited, so please refrain from using them or check beforehand.
  • Insect protection: Insects (such as ticks) and mosquitoes may appear in the summer. We recommend wearing long sleeves and insect repellent.
  • Facility and store opening hours: Nearby stores and restrooms may be closed depending on the season and day of the week. Please check in advance, especially early in the morning or during winter.

The path to the waterfall is rich in nature and easy to access, and you can enjoy the natural scenery in a short amount of time, making it a great spot for a casual refreshment near the city. When visiting, please be sure to check public transportation times and local warning signs, and enjoy the waterfall safely.
