Mishaka Pond (Misha-kai-ike) / Chino City, Nagano Prefecture — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)
Mishaka Pond is a small reservoir located in Kitayama (Tateshina region) in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, known for the scenery of the surrounding trees reflected in its calm, mirror-like water surface. Originally an artificial pond built for agricultural use, its beautiful scenery attracted the attention of local landscape painters and photographers, and it became widely known, particularly in connection with the works of Higashiyama Kaii. The water's color and appearance change dramatically depending on the season and time of day, from fog to snow, making it a popular spot for photography enthusiasts and tourists who enjoy nature.
Highlights
- Reflections of trees and sky on the water's surface: When there is no wind, the beech and coniferous trees and the surrounding sky are reflected like a mirror, creating a scenery that is just like a painting.
- Early morning fog and silence: In the morning, fog tends to roll in, creating a mystical atmosphere. We recommend visiting during quiet times.
- Seasonal Changes: Each season has its own unique charm, from the fresh greenery of spring, the deep green of summer, the colorful autumn leaves (when the surrounding trees turn yellow to red), and the snow-covered winter scenery.
- Photo spot: The woods, bridges, and wooden embankments on the opposite bank, visible across the pond, are easy to include in the composition, making this a great spot for taking photos.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- The nearest major station is Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, making it a convenient starting point for sightseeing.
- Public transportation: There are buses available from Chino Station and Lake Shirakaba, but please check the timetable in advance as there are few buses. Bus schedules may vary depending on the season and day of the week.

- Access Restrictions/Private Property: There is private property and fenced areas around the pond. Please stay within the designated viewing area and do not damage plants or banks.
- No littering or noise: To protect the natural environment, please be sure to take your trash with you and refrain from making loud noises.
- Seasonal precautions: In winter, roads may be difficult to pass due to frozen surfaces, accumulated snow, and blizzards. In summer, be aware of the cold mornings and evenings and the weather changes typical of the plateau.
- Use of drones, etc.: When using drones, please be considerate of the surrounding environment and other visitors, and comply with laws and regulations. Drone use may be prohibited in some cases.
