[Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)]
Heirinji Temple is a Zen temple located in Niiza City, Saitama Prefecture, and is characterized by its surrounding vast woodland (Heirinjirin) and tranquil grounds. It is said to have been founded long ago and has a history spanning from the Muromachi to Sengoku periods, and has been preserved as a satoyama (village forest) on the outskirts of the city since the Edo period. The woods surrounding the temple are known as a prime example of woodland that retains the "image of Musashino," and its greatest appeal is the fact that you can enjoy the changing seasons (cherry blossoms, young leaves, deep greenery, autumn foliage). It is popular with local residents and photography enthusiasts as a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a leisurely stroll amidst the tranquility of Zen and abundant nature.
