Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Hirado Dutch Trading Post is a restored and renovated facility located on the site of a former Dutch trading post during the Edo period. It is a cultural tourist spot where you can learn about the historical connection between Hirado and the Netherlands (Dutch merchants - a trading base before they reached Dejima in Nagasaki). In the early 17th century, Hirado was one of the important trading locations for European merchants in East Asia, and also developed close ties with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Through the restored buildings, excavated items, and document exhibits, you can learn about the state of trade at the time, as well as the influence of lifestyle, culture, and architectural styles.

Highlights

  • restored building: The building is modeled after a trading post from that time, and by looking at the exterior and interior layout you can get an idea of what a trading hub was like in the Edo period.
  • Exhibition materialsHistorical documents, maps, ship equipment, replicas of trade goods, and excavated artifacts related to the Tokugawa period and trade with the Netherlands are on display, and are presented in an easy-to-understand manner with explanatory panels and models.
  • Permanent and special exhibitions: Special exhibitions related to VOC and local history are held from time to time, allowing you to delve deeper into specialized themes (we recommend checking the exhibits before visiting).
  • Scenery and walks around the areaLocated in an area that retains the scenery and old townscape typical of Hirado's port town, you can enjoy the view from the Dutch Trading Post and stroll to the surrounding tourist spots.
  • Learning and experience: In addition to explanatory panels, guided tours and explanations by volunteers are sometimes available, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of the historical background (please check in advance to see if these are available).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • public transport
    • The nearest major station is Sasebo Station (JR), and there are bus and local bus routes from Sasebo to Hirado. Take a train and bus to Hirado Bus Terminal (in Hirado City), and then walk or take a taxi from there.
    • The easiest way to get around is by using Hirado City's local buses or taxis. Routes and number of services vary depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • car
    • From Nagasaki City or Sasebo, you can access the area via the Hirado Bridge (National Route 383). The travel time will vary depending on your departure point, but it is approximately a 40-minute drive from Sasebo (depending on traffic conditions).
    • There are often parking lots around the facility, but the number of spaces may be limited, so if it is crowded, please consider using a nearby paid parking lot.
  • From the plane: The most common route is to travel from Nagasaki Airport or Fukuoka Airport via Sasebo by rental car or by combining express buses and JR trains.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: 30 to 45 minutes (just a quick look at the exterior of the building and the main exhibits)
  • Thorough viewing: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes (if you carefully look at the exhibits, listen to the explanations, and take a walk around the area)

  • congestion: It can get crowded during tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, etc.) and on weekends. If you want to avoid the crowds, visit on a weekday or early in the morning for a more relaxed viewing experience.
  • Tour etiquette: Please follow the instructions of the permanent exhibits, such as not touching the exhibits and refraining from using flash photography. Eating and drinking are generally prohibited inside the museum.
  • Barrier-free: As this is a restored historical building, there are some steps and narrow passageways. Barrier-free facilities vary depending on the facility, so please inquire in advance if you require special consideration, such as wheelchair access.
  • Seasonal clothing:Hirado is close to the sea and there are windy days. We recommend that you take measures to protect yourself from the sea breeze in spring and autumn, the cold in winter, and the sun in summer.
