Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Oka Castle (Oka Castle Ruins and Oka Castle Ruins Park) is the remains of a mountain castle from the Middle Ages to the early modern period in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, and is known for its abundant stone walls and the views from the mountaintop. It was developed as a castle from the Sengoku to Edo periods, and even after its abandonment, the remains of the stone walls and kuruwa (enclosures) remain in good condition. It is also known as the place where composer Rentaro Taki got the idea for his song "Kojo no Tsuki," and the beautiful scenery attracts many tourists, especially during the cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage season.
