Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Gifu Prefectural Museum of Art is a prefectural art museum that collects, preserves, and exhibits artworks from within and outside the prefecture. Its collection encompasses a wide range of genres, from contemporary art to modern and contemporary Japanese and Western paintings, prints, and sculptures, and it also places emphasis on works by artists with ties to the region and related to Gifu. Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR/Meitetsu Gifu Station (*Public transportation is the most common method of access)
  • Bus: There are often bus routes from Gifu Station to bus stops near the museum. Please check the route and schedule in advance.
  • Taxi: Taking a taxi from Gifu Station is also convenient. This is recommended if you have luggage or want to save time.
  • By car: There may be parking available at the museum (limited number of spaces). If it is full, please use a nearby paid parking lot. On busy days, it is best to arrive early.
  • Bicycles and walking: If you are close to the city center, you can also access the museum by bicycle or on foot. Please note that some museums are located on slopes, so please be mindful of your clothing.

Nearby spots

  • Gifu Park/Mount Kinka (Ropeway/Gifu Castle) — Enjoy nature and a stroll around the castle ruins.
  • Nagara River — Famous for riverside strolls and seasonal cormorant fishing viewing (summer).
  • Yanagase Shopping Street — A shopping and dining area with a wide selection of local cuisine and cafes.
  • Cultural facilities such as the Gifu City Museum of History are convenient to visit in conjunction with art museums.
  • There are plenty of nearby shrines, temples, and parks to stop by during your walk.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It tends to get crowded during special exhibitions, on weekends, and on holidays. If you want to take your time looking around, we recommend visiting on a weekday morning.
  • Photography: There are many works in the exhibition rooms where photography is prohibited. Please follow the signs at the entrance and instructions of the staff regarding whether photography is permitted or not.
  • Food and drink/luggage management: In principle, eating and drinking, and bringing large luggage into exhibition rooms are generally prohibited. However, you may be able to use the cloakroom or lockers for large coats and bags.
  • Manners: Please observe general museum etiquette, such as putting your mobile phone on silent mode, making calls outside the exhibition room, and being considerate to those in front of you as they view the exhibits.
  • Seasonal notes: Please dress appropriately for the heat in summer and the cold and icy roads in winter. If you will be moving outdoors, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
