a lush green forest filled with lots of trees

Yakushima is an island in Kagoshima Prefecture that was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Its forests, supported by abundant rainfall and a diverse ecosystem, are also known as the "Alps of the Ocean," and are particularly known for their Yakusugi cedar trees, which are thousands of years old. It is said to have been the setting for the Ghibli film "Princess Mononoke," and many tourists from both Japan and abroad visit the island as a spot where they can experience the mystical nature.

Highlights

  • Yakusugi cedars, including Jomon cedar and Daio cedar, are thousands of years old
  • Mossy forest of Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge
  • A trekking course reminiscent of the forest of spirits
  • Nagata Inakahama, where sea turtles lay their eggs

access

It takes about 2 hours by high-speed boat from Kagoshima Port, or about 4 hours by ferry. There is also a direct flight from Kagoshima Airport to Yakushima Airport, which takes about 40 minutes.

Estimated stay

Ideally, two to three nights is enough to enjoy the main trekking and sightseeing. Day trips are possible, but a multi-day stay is recommended to fully experience the natural beauty of the area.

Nearby spots

  • Kuchinoerabu Island (Kagoshima Prefecture) — An isolated island with an active volcano and hot springs
  • Tanegashima (Kagoshima Prefecture) — Space Center and Beautiful Coastline
  • Hiranai Undersea Hot Springs (Yakushima Town) — A natural open-air bath that appears with the tides

Points to note

There is a lot of rain throughout the year, so rainwear and waterproof measures are essential. Many trekking routes require physical strength, so it is recommended to prepare in advance and be accompanied by a guide. Weather can change suddenly in mountainous areas, so be sure to plan your activities carefully.
