## Overview (history, features, appeal)
Lake Ozenuma is a highland lake (a lake surrounded by marshes) located in Oze National Park in Katashina Village, Gunma Prefecture. The Oze area is known for its unique high-altitude marsh, Ozegahara, and its landscape with well-maintained boardwalks, and Lake Ozenuma is captivating for the contrast between its tranquil surface, the surrounding marshes, and the towering mountains in the distance (such as Mt. Hiuchigatake and Mt. Shibutsu). Historically, the area was used for horse grazing and grass harvesting, and conservation efforts have helped to maintain the natural environment. The lake changes its appearance with each season, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of skunk cabbage in spring, alpine plants in summer, autumn leaves, and the snowy winter season (access is restricted).
## Highlights
- Lakeside boardwalks and walking trails: Boardwalks and footpaths have been constructed around Lake Oze, making it easy to enjoy strolling around the marshland and lakeside. The upside-down reflection of Mt. Hiuchigatake in the calm lake surface is a popular photo spot.
- Skunk cabbage (Mizubasho): In spring (mainly from late May to June), the marshland is covered in white flowers, a typical sight in Oze.
– Alpine plants: In summer, you can see alpine flowers such as day lilies.
- Mountain scenery: Mountains such as Hiuchigatake and Shibutsu can be seen in the distance, making it ideal for landscape photography, which changes appearance depending on the season and time of day.
- Staying in huts and mountain huts: There are mountain huts and huts around Lake Ozenuma, so you can not only take a day trip but also stay overnight and enjoy the morning and evening scenery and the starry sky.
## Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest entrance: From the Gunma side, the most common route is via Katashina Village. If you are using public transportation, it is convenient to take JR or other lines to the nearest major station (e.g., Numata Station) and then take a local bus or shuttle bus to the trailhead of Oze.
– Main trailheads and routes:
– Hatomachi Pass Route: A route that passes through Ozegahara and heads towards Lake Ozenuma. It is relatively well-maintained and popular with hikers.
- Numayama Pass Route: This is a direct route to Lake Oze and is suitable for those who want to take a route close to the lakeside.
- Togura-Oshimizu Route (Katashina Village side): You can drive your own car up to the trailhead, but in the summer there are often restrictions on private cars and shuttle buses, so it's best to check in advance.
- Note for those travelling by car: In the Oze area, there are restrictions on private cars and parking lots can fill up, so it is safer to use public transport or special shuttles. During peak seasons, bus and shuttle schedules and boarding arrangements will be adjusted, so please check the latest information in advance.
(*Specific bus times, boarding points, and parking information change depending on the season and year, so please check the Katashina Village Tourism Website or the Oze Visitor Center for the latest information before setting off.)
## Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- A quick stroll along the lake: 1-2 hours (photography and a light walk)
- Day hike (round trip from trailhead): Half a day to a full day (approximately 3-6 hours depending on round trip travel time and route)
- Relaxed tour and mountain hut stay: 2 days and 1 night (we recommend staying overnight if you want to enjoy the early morning and evening views, stargazing, and hiking in the surrounding mountains)
– If you combine major hikes or summits in the area, you may need to plan for more than one or two days.
## Nearby spots
– Ozegahara (the vast marshland area of Oze): A typical walking area where you can enjoy magnificent scenery along boardwalks.
- Hiuchigatake: A volcano towering over Lake Ozenuma, it has well-maintained hiking routes (including courses for advanced climbers).
- Mt. Shibutsu: One of the most representative mountains in Oze, the view from the summit is spectacular.
– Oze Visitor Center (useful for gathering information before entering the mountain): Provides tours, the latest nature information, weather information, and route guidance.
– Hot springs and tourist facilities in Katashina Village: There are hot springs where you can soak after hiking, as well as local restaurants.
## Things to note (crowds, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Season and clothing: Oze is at a high altitude, so the weather can change easily and it can get cold in the mornings and evenings. Be sure to bring rain gear, cold weather gear, and waterproof hiking boots. In spring, there may be residual snow or mud.
- Opening period: Access is often restricted in winter due to snow accumulation, and the visiting season is generally from spring to autumn (this may vary from year to year). Please check the opening information in advance.
- Crowds: Weekends during Golden Week, summer vacation, and the autumn foliage season are extremely crowded. Parking lots and buses tend to fill up quickly, so we recommend leaving early, using public transportation, and booking accommodation in advance.
- Manners and conservation: Do not stray from boardwalks or designated trails. Alpine plants and marshes are very delicate, and if trampled on they take a long time to recover. Always take your trash with you, and bonfires are strictly prohibited in many areas.
- Safety measures: There are sections where you will not have mobile phone coverage. Prepare a map (paper or offline map), a headlamp, plenty of food and water, and first aid. Avoid traveling alone or inform others of your plans.
- Mountain hut usage: Accommodation and meal availability at mountain huts vary depending on the season. It is best to make a reservation or contact them in advance if you plan to use them. Also, if you are staying at a hut, please observe proper etiquette (bathing, handling of garbage, lights-out time, etc.).
- Ecosystem and animal protection: There is a risk of damage from pests and ticks, so please take measures to repellent insects and dress appropriately. When information about bears is released, restrictions on entry may be imposed, so please check the latest information.
