Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Shiriyazaki Lighthouse is an iconic lighthouse on Cape Shiriyazaki, located in Higashidori Village, on the eastern tip of the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. It played a role in the coastal shipping route established in the Meiji period, and has long watched over ships as a key point overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Tsugaru Strait. The white tower stands out against the rough waves, and the magnificent scenery created by the surrounding cliffs and wide seascape attracts visitors.
It is especially famous for being able to see the native horses called "Kandachime" that are pastured on the cape in winter up close. The combination of the sea, horses, and lighthouse not only makes for a great photo, but also allows you to experience the changing expressions of nature depending on the season and weather, which is a major attraction.
Highlights
- Exterior of Shiriyazaki Lighthouse: The contrast between the chalk white lighthouse and the reef. You can take a photo of the whole view from the footpath around the lighthouse (please note that the interior of the lighthouse is often closed to the public, so please check in advance).
- Viewing the Kantachi Horses: These native horses can be seen on the cape in winter (late autumn to early spring). It is quite picturesque to see them grazing in their natural state. Please do not touch or feed the horses under any circumstances.
- View and seascape: On clear days, the horizon is clear, and on stormy days, the rough waves and spray of the sea are impressive. The evening and morning views are also beautiful.
- Bird watching and nature observation: This is a good place to observe nature, including seabirds and seasonal flowers.

- Mobile phone signals and facilities: Depending on the location, mobile phone signals may be weak and food and beverage establishments and shops may be limited, so it is a good idea to bring drinks and warm clothing.

- Photography etiquette: Please be considerate when taking photos if other tourists, local people, or horses are in the photo.
