Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Fugaku Wind Cave is a lava cave (a tunnel-shaped cave formed by cooled lava) at the foot of Mount Fuji, located in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture. It is a natural cavity formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Fuji, and because its interior remains cool all year round, it has long been used to store ice and silkworm eggs. The cool air inside the cave, the remnants of ice, and the unique topography are of great tourist and academic value, and it has been included as a World Heritage Site as part of Mount Fuji's assets.
Highlights
- Cave space created by lava: You can observe up close the naturally formed tunnels and cavities, as well as the landforms created by lava flows.
- Low temperature inside the cave and traces of ice: Even in summer, cool air flows through the cave, and in some places you can see traces of ice and frozen remains (this varies with the seasons).
- Traces of historical use: There are explanations and exhibits of the holes and equipment that were once used to store silkworm eggs and food, which is interesting from a life history perspective.
- Observation paths and exhibition panels: A boardwalk and lighting system allow for safe observation, and explanatory panels about the cave and Mount Fuji will help you deepen your understanding.
- Photo spot: The cave entrance and surrounding scenery are photogenic. The contrast with the cool air is especially enjoyable in the summer.
