Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Fugaku Wind Cave is a lava cave (a tunnel-shaped cave formed by cooled lava) at the foot of Mount Fuji, located in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture. It is a natural cavity formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Fuji, and because its interior remains cool all year round, it has long been used to store ice and silkworm eggs. The cool air inside the cave, the remnants of ice, and the unique topography are of great tourist and academic value, and it has been included as a World Heritage Site as part of Mount Fuji's assets.

Highlights

  • Cave space created by lava: You can observe up close the naturally formed tunnels and cavities, as well as the landforms created by lava flows.
  • Low temperature inside the cave and traces of ice: Even in summer, cool air flows through the cave, and in some places you can see traces of ice and frozen remains (this varies with the seasons).
  • Traces of historical use: There are explanations and exhibits of the holes and equipment that were once used to store silkworm eggs and food, which is interesting from a life history perspective.
  • Observation paths and exhibition panels: A boardwalk and lighting system allow for safe observation, and explanatory panels about the cave and Mount Fuji will help you deepen your understanding.
  • Photo spot: The cave entrance and surrounding scenery are photogenic. The contrast with the cool air is especially enjoyable in the summer.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Kawaguchiko Station on the Fujikyuko Line
  • Public transportation: Take the Fujikyuko Bus (bound for Lake Saiko, Lake Shojiko, Lake Motosu, etc.) from Kawaguchiko Station for about 15 to 25 minutes, get off at the bus stop "Fugaku Wind Cave (Wind Cave)" or similar, and walk for a few minutes. Routes and times change depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • By car: Accessible via the Chuo Expressway (towards Lake Kawaguchi). Paid parking is available nearby (limited space). During peak periods, the parking lot may fill up, so it is recommended to arrive early.
  • Note: Roads may freeze over in winter, early mornings and at night. Please bring studless tires.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Temperature: The cave is cold throughout the year (around 0-5°C in some places). You'll need a jacket, especially in summer. It gets even colder in winter, so be sure to dress warmly.
  • Clothing and shoes: There are steps, wet floors, and slippery areas inside the cave. Wear comfortable shoes (sneakers, etc.) and clothes that are easy to move in. Avoid sandals and heels.
  • Crowds: It gets crowded on weekends during Golden Week, summer vacation, and the autumn foliage season. You may have to wait for parking or to get in, so it's best to arrive early.
  • Safety and Manners: Please follow instructions such as staying on the designated path, following handrails and no-entry signs, and not touching the ice or terrain inside the cave. There are narrow sections inside the cave, so please be considerate of others when it is crowded.
  • Barrier-free: There are some areas inside the cave that are difficult to access in a wheelchair. If you have a physical disability, please check with the facility in advance.
  • Check the latest information: Opening times, admission fees, and transportation access may change depending on the season and weather. Please check the official website or local tourist information at the last minute.
