Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Miyagase Dam is a multipurpose dam located in Aikawa Town, Aiko District, Kanagawa Prefecture (and the surrounding area) with the purposes of flood control, water supply, and power generation. Surrounded by mountains and lush greenery, the artificial lake "Lake Miyagase (Miyagase Dam Lake)" is a popular recreational spot for the region, with beautiful seasonal scenery reflected on its surface and changing appearance throughout the year.

The area around the dam is dotted with tourist facilities and parks, observation spots, walking trails, rest areas, souvenir shops, restaurants, and more. Many visitors flock to the area, especially during the autumn foliage season, the fresh greenery of spring, and the winter illumination period. The magnificent views from the dam embankment and observation deck, as well as the nighttime illuminations (when available), are popular photo spots.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view from the observation deck: You can see the dam embankment, the expansive Lake Miyagase, and the surrounding mountains. It is especially beautiful in the morning and evening light and when the sea of clouds is visible.
  • Lakeside park and promenade: There are promenades and benches for leisurely strolling, making it ideal for picnics and hiking.
  • Museum/Visitor Center: A facility where you can learn about the dam's structure, history, and the surrounding nature (there may be permanent exhibits and panels).
  • Pleasure boats and sightseeing boats (seasonal operation possible): The view from the lake is different from that on land, making it popular with families (operations vary depending on the season and weather).
  • Water release (viewing event): Water releases are sometimes carried out to adjust the water level, and may be announced as viewing events. Please check the official information in advance.
  • Illuminations and Light-ups (seasonal): Light-ups held during the winter and other seasons create a fantastical nightscape (the period varies from year to year).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus: The main way to get there is by bus from a train station. For example, take the Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu bus bound for Miyagase from Hon-Atsugi Station (Odakyu Line) or Hashimoto Station (JR Yokohama Line/Sagami Line). The travel time will vary depending on the section you take, but it's roughly 40-60 minutes by bus (timetables vary depending on the season and day of the week).
  • By car: Access is easy via the Tomei Expressway and the Ken-O Expressway. From Atsugi, it takes about 30 to 60 minutes via national and prefectural roads (depending on your starting point and traffic conditions). Parking is available in various locations along the lake, but it can get crowded on weekends and during the autumn foliage season, so it's best to arrive early.
  • Tourist buses/tours: During peak seasons, the area is often visited by tourist bus or day tour, and transportation may be included if you join a tour.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term viewing only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including taking photos at the observation deck)
  • Lakeside walk + snack: 2-3 hours (walk around the park, use of cafe and shop)
  • If you include a boat ride, museum visit, and hiking in the area: Half a day to a full day (4-6 hours)

Nearby spots

  • Miyagase Lakeside Park: Popular with families, with walking paths, plazas, and rest facilities.
  • Nearby hiking trails: There are mountain paths overlooking the lake and walking trails through rural woodlands scattered around (levels vary depending on the trail).
  • Local Food & Souvenir Shops: There are shops selling local specialties and snacks around the lake (open seasonally).
  • Seasonal event venue: Illuminations, local festivals, markets, etc. may be held here (please check the dates).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Roads and parking lots can be crowded, especially during the autumn foliage season, weekends, and illumination periods. We recommend using public transportation and visiting early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Climate and clothing: As this is a mountainous area, the weather can change quickly and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings. Please bring comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing.
  • Release and restricted areas: There are areas around the dam embankment and in the management area where you cannot enter. Please follow the fences, signs, and instructions of staff. Photographing and entering dangerous areas is strictly prohibited.
  • Garbage and Manners: Please take your trash home or dispose of it in designated areas. Please be considerate of the natural environment and local residents (noise, smoking areas).
  • Pets: Generally, pets are allowed in some places, but please keep them on a leash and follow the facility rules. Don't forget to be considerate of hygiene and other visitors.
  • Check operation and event information: Sightseeing boats, release viewing, and illumination events may be changed or canceled depending on the season, weather, and operational circumstances. Please check the official website or tourist information in advance for the latest information.
  • Flying drones, etc.: Drone flying may be restricted around dams for safety and management reasons. Please check the regulations in advance and do not fly drones without permission.

Recommended points (short suggestions)

  • Enjoying the view of the lake and mountains from the observation deck in the quiet early morning hours is a relaxing way to take photos and stroll around.
  • It gets very crowded during the autumn foliage season and the winter illumination period, so be sure to check public transportation times and parking availability in advance and plan your visit accordingly.
  • You can gain a deeper understanding and enjoy your walk by looking at the safety guides and exhibits about the dam and facilities beforehand.

*For detailed bus times, event information, release schedules, and parking lot opening and closing times, please check the latest information from Miyagase Dam and the town's official tourism website or Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu.
