Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hoto Shrine is a small shrine located on Takashima in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and is known nationwide for its blessings in winning the lottery. Takashima is a small island floating in Karatsu Bay, and the entire island has a tranquil atmosphere. Hoto Shrine is located near the center of the island, and it is said that visiting the shrine brings good luck in winning the lottery and increasing one's financial fortunes, so many visitors come to pray for a win.
Its origins are rooted in ancient worship of the sea and local folklore, but especially since the lottery boom, reports of winning have been pouring in, and the number of worshippers has skyrocketed. The shrine and shop are lined with charms, votive plaques, and items for praying for winning that feature the character "to," and unique souvenirs are also popular.
