Munakata Taisha Shrine (Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)
Munakata Taisha Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, dedicated to the Three Munakata Goddesses, who are in charge of protecting maritime traffic. Since ancient times, it has been the center of faith for praying for safe maritime traffic and navigation, and in 2017, the sacred area including Okinoshima (Okitsumiya) was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Sacred Island" of Okinoshima and Associated Sites.
Munakata Taisha Shrine is unique in its main shrine structure, consisting of three shrines: Hetsumiya (on the mainland), Nakatsumiya (on Oshima), and Okitsumiya (on Okinoshima). Many ancient ritual remains have been discovered on Okinoshima in particular, and because its sacredness is maintained by being isolated from the outside world, landing on the island is strictly restricted.
