Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Lake Shinjiko is a brackish water lake that spreads across the urban area of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and is one of the most representative inland bays on the Sea of Japan coast. The lake's surface is relatively wide, and the changing light from morning to evening reveals a variety of different expressions, making the "Lake Shinjiko Sunset" a famous tourist attraction. The lake has long been a key location for fishing, salt production, and transportation, and has been deeply connected to local life. In addition, the "shijimi clams (Lake Shinjishijimi)" harvested from Lake Shinjiko are known nationwide and play an important role in the region's food culture.
