Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tsumago-juku is a post town on the Nakasendo road in Minami Kiso Town, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. It flourished as a post town on the Nakasendo road during the Edo period, and is known for the well-preserved townscape and buildings of the past. Designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976, the townscape retains a strong sense of the atmosphere of those days through efforts to bury power lines underground and preserve the landscape.

The area is lined with old inns and merchant houses, tiled roofs, lattice doors, and cobblestone streets, and its greatest charm is that you can feel the atmosphere of the Edo to Meiji periods just by strolling around. The area is surrounded by clear streams and forests, and you can enjoy beautiful scenery in each of the four seasons.

Highlights

  • The townscape of the post town: The main street is lined with well-preserved merchant houses and inns. The scenery retains the atmosphere of the Edo period, and there are many photo spots.
  • Honjin and Wakihonjin ruins: Historical sites and buildings from the time of the Honjin and Wakihonjin, which were the main facilities of the post town (some areas are open to the public and may be able to be toured inside).
  • Tour of old inns and houses: There are museums, souvenir shops, coffee shops, etc. that have been converted from old houses. There are also facilities where you can see exhibits of local materials and folk tools.
  • Historical sites of post towns (such as the remains of a notice board): Visiting historical sites related to road arrangements and transportation will deepen your understanding of history.
  • Nakasendo Walk from Magome-juku to Tsumago-juku: An old road about 8km long (takes about 2-3 hours). This hiking course blends nature and history with valleys, stone pavements, and the remains of old teahouses (please be mindful of your physical strength and equipment).
  • Four Seasons Scenery: There are many different seasonal expressions, such as spring flowers, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes.

  • By car: Access via the Chuo Expressway Nakatsugawa IC or from Matsumoto via national and prefectural roads. There is a public parking lot (fee required) near the entrance to the post town. In order to preserve the old houses, there are restrictions on vehicle traffic and parking within the town, so please follow the signs.
  • From Nagoya and Tokyo: The most common way to get there is to take the JR Chuo Main Line from Nagoya to Nakatsugawa or Minami Kiso, or from Tokyo (Shinjuku, etc.) by Chuo Main Line Limited Express + local train. Please check public transport connections and timetables in advance.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded during Golden Week, autumn foliage season, and consecutive holidays. Parking lots can fill up, so we recommend using public transportation and arriving early.
  • Manners in conservation areas: The townscape is a residential and conservation area. Noise, littering, and unauthorized entry into buildings are strictly prohibited. When taking photographs, please be considerate and not disturb private property or people's lives.
  • Business hours: Souvenir shops and restaurants have different opening hours depending on the tourist season and the day of the week, and many stores close earlier in winter. If there is a facility you are interested in visiting, be sure to check in advance.
  • Cash: Smaller stores often don't accept credit cards, so it's a good idea to have cash on hand.
  • Clothing and equipment: Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones, slopes, and mountain paths. Be careful on rainy or snowy days as the terrain can be slippery. If hiking along the Nakasendo trail, be sure to bring drinking water, a hat, and rain gear.
  • Seasonal precautions: In summer, it can be humid and hot, so be sure to take measures to prevent heatstroke. In winter, snow and ice can cause road restrictions and facility closures. Please check in advance, especially in winter.
  • Pets: In order to preserve the townscape, regulations and etiquette may be required. Please check the rules and regulations regarding pets before walking around.

Tsumago-juku is a perfect place for a stroll, where history and nature coexist in harmony. Please enjoy strolling, eating, and resting at your leisure, while respecting the rules of the preservation district. We recommend checking official tourist guides and public transport timetables before your visit for the latest information on transportation and each facility.
