Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tsumago-juku is a post town on the Nakasendo road in Minami Kiso Town, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. It flourished as a post town on the Nakasendo road during the Edo period, and is known for the well-preserved townscape and buildings of the past. Designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976, the townscape retains a strong sense of the atmosphere of those days through efforts to bury power lines underground and preserve the landscape.
The area is lined with old inns and merchant houses, tiled roofs, lattice doors, and cobblestone streets, and its greatest charm is that you can feel the atmosphere of the Edo to Meiji periods just by strolling around. The area is surrounded by clear streams and forests, and you can enjoy beautiful scenery in each of the four seasons.
