Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Amanoiwato Shrine, located in Takachiho Town, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a shrine connected to the legend of Amaterasu Omikami hiding in the Heavenly Rock Cave, as described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Since ancient times, it has attracted worshippers as a sacred place dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, and is notable for the large number of people who visit it along with the Amanoiwato Cave, the setting of the myth, and Amanoyasukawara, where the gods are said to have met for consultation.
Takachiho is an area where mythology and natural scenery blend together, creating a mystical atmosphere. We recommend combining your visit with a visit to the shrine where you can experience ancient beliefs, the surrounding valleys and waterfalls, and nighttime kagura (Takachiho Kagura).
