Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Oura Cathedral is a Catholic church located in Higashiyamate-cho, Nagasaki City. Built in 1864, it is one of Japan's oldest wooden Gothic churches. It was constructed for the foreign settlement in Nagasaki, which opened its port to foreigners from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji era, and is characterized by its exterior and interior, which combine the Western architectural techniques of the time with Japanese wooden construction techniques. In 1865, the church gained international recognition after a "hidden Christian" believer came forward in the church (discovery of the believer), and it now attracts many visitors from both Japan and overseas as a site of great historical and cultural value. In 2018, it was registered as a World Heritage Site as one of the components of the "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region."
Highlights
- Exterior: A unique sight created by the red brick tower and wooden Gothic facade. Built on the slope of a hill, it creates a beautiful contrast with the surrounding slopes and stone walls.
- Interior atmosphere: High wooden arched ceilings, stained glass, and sculptures and decorations around the altar. The tranquil and solemn space is perfect for photos (please check the photography rules).
- Historical exhibit on the discovery of hidden Christians: There are materials and explanatory panels on the history of hidden Christians and how they were discovered, allowing you to learn about the history of Christianity in Nagasaki.
- Surrounding scenery: You can see views of Nagasaki Port and Urakami from in front of the church, and the evening and night views are particularly beautiful (the church may be lit up at night).
