Mount Omine is a sacred mountain that stretches from Tenkawa Village in Yoshino County, Nara Prefecture, and has long been known as a center of mountain worship (Shugendo). Within the mountains, there are training grounds for mountain ascetics (shugenja) and an ancient Shugendo trail (Omine Okugake Trail), and the mountain is attractive for its unique landscape and culture that blends faith and nature. The Omine mountain range is registered as a World Heritage Site as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," and is rich in attractions such as deep forests, steep ridgelines, valleys, and moss-covered stone steps.
Highlights
- Omine Okugake Trail: An ancient pilgrimage route stretching from Yoshino to Kumano. It has great historical value as a Shugendo pilgrimage route, and the sense of accomplishment of traversing it is immense.
- Climbing Mount Hakkyo: One of the most representative peaks in the Omine mountain range, it offers a great view from the Kansai side, and on clear days you can see far into the distance.
- Around Mount Misen: This spot has a strong religious atmosphere, with ascetic training grounds, small shrines, and rock formations scattered throughout.
- Dorogawa Hot Springs: A hot spring resort that is convenient as the starting and ending point of mountain climbing. It is the perfect place to soothe the fatigue of mountain travel.
- Valleys, forests, and alpine plantsThe seasonal fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and wildflowers are beautiful, making it a great place for photography.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
It can be accessed by both public transport and car, but you'll need to plan your trip in advance if you want to take the full-scale hiking route.
- Train + Bus:The nearest major stations are Kintetsu Yoshino Station and Shimoichiguchi Station. From there, the most common route is to take the Nara Kotsu bus to Dorogawa Onsen (Dorogawa). Buses run infrequently, so it's important to check the timetable in advance.
- car:Accessible from the Hanna Road, Nishi-Meihan Road, Minami-Hanna Road, etc. Use the national highway and forest roads heading towards Tenkawa Village. There are parking lots near the trailhead, but the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend arriving early.
- Car Rental + Shuttle:For areas where public transportation is infrequent, it is convenient to rent a car or use a local taxi. Some accommodations may also offer shuttle service.

- Day hike (short course around Dorogawa): 2-5 hours round trip
- Climbing a typical peak (e.g., round trip from the trailhead to Mt. Yatsugatake): Intermediate to advanced, approximately 6 to 10 hours round trip (depending on route and physical strength)
- Omine Okugake Trail: A full-scale mountain trip that takes several days (generally 2-4 days).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Equipment and Technology:The Omine traverse route and some of the hiking trails are steep, with chains and rocky areas. Many routes require experience and physical strength, so be sure to bring basic equipment such as hiking boots, rain gear, a headlamp, a map, GPS, extra food and water.
- weather:The weather in the mountains is changeable, so be careful of sudden thunderstorms in the summer and snow and ice in the winter. In winter, you will need winter mountaineering equipment (crampons, ice axes, etc.) and the necessary skills.
- Mobile phone calls and signals:There are many places in the mountains where cell phone signals do not reach. Avoid traveling alone and inform your family and accommodations of your itinerary.
- congestion:The main routes and hot spring areas are crowded during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season. Parking lots and buses may fill up quickly.
- Religious Considerations:This is a place that has a strong aspect as a sacred place for Shugendo. Please be mindful of manners when visiting shrines and training sites, such as remaining quiet, taking your trash with you, and respecting restricted areas.
- Wildlife:Be careful of small animals and pests (such as ticks). Manage food properly and do not feed animals unnecessarily.
