Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Oita Marine Palace Aquarium "Umitamago" is a popular aquarium located along Beppu Bay in Oita City, Oita Prefecture. Since opening in 1999, the aquarium has exhibited mainly creatures from the waters off Kyushu, and also focuses on educational and conservation activities. Taking advantage of its location facing the bay, the aquarium boasts a large aquarium, dolphin and sea lion shows, a touch pool and other hands-on programs, making it a facility that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Along with the nearby Takasakiyama Natural Zoo, the aquarium is also known as a tourist hub where visitors can experience nature and animals.

  • Manners: Touching or hitting the glass exhibits is strictly prohibited as it causes stress to the animals. Flash photography is restricted in some exhibits. Please follow the instructions of staff to view the exhibits safely.
  • Weather and Outdoor Shows: Outdoor shows may be changed or canceled depending on the weather and sea conditions. Please be aware that the outdoor areas may be subject to strong sunlight or wind on some days.
  • Traveling with children: It's a good idea to check in advance whether facilities such as strollers, nursing rooms, and diaper changing facilities are available.

  • Seasonal precautions: In winter, the wind is strong and the temperature feels low. In summer, take precautions against UV rays and heat. As it is a seaside area, be aware of sudden weather changes.
  • Check the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, event schedules, etc. may be subject to change, so please check the official website or social media for the latest information before visiting.
