Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Botchan Train is a tourist replica train that runs through Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, and is characterized by its exterior, which recreates the atmosphere of the small locomotive that appeared in Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan." The charming, retro wooden-style passenger cars and red locomotive-like form make it a popular tourist attraction, allowing tourists to feel like they're back in Botchan's time as it leisurely runs along the route connecting Dogo Onsen and central Matsuyama. The replica train incorporates the original design in its exterior and interior, and is maintained and operated in accordance with modern safety standards.

Highlights

  • Exterior design: A red locomotive-style body and wood-grain passenger cars create a retro look that's perfect for photos.
  • Interior atmosphere: Wooden seats, retro interior, and a design that evokes the world of the novel.
  • Scenery along the line: Take your time to enjoy the views of Matsuyama city and the townscape around Dogo Onsen. The area around Dogo Onsen Station is particularly packed with tourist attractions, so getting off the train and strolling around the area is even more appealing.
  • Photo spots: Dogo Onsen, Dogo Onsen Station, and the streets of Matsuyama are popular spots for taking photos. The locomotives are easy to photograph when departing and arriving.
  • Presentation/Uniforms: Conductors and crew members sometimes wear retro uniforms, which helps to create a certain atmosphere (depending on the operation).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station/platform: Matsuyama City Station and Dogo Onsen Station on the Iyotetsu City Tram are the main boarding and disembarking points. The route runs along part of the line connecting central Matsuyama City and Dogo Onsen.
  • Access from JR: From JR Matsuyama Station, walk or transfer to the tram (Iyotetsu) in the direction of Matsuyama City Station. The most common tourist route is from Matsuyama City Station to Dogo Onsen.
  • From the airport: Take the limousine bus or tram from Matsuyama Airport to the city center. Dogo Onsen is also accessible by bus or train.
  • Visiting by car: The city can get crowded with tourists, so it is convenient to use public transportation. Parking spaces around Dogo Onsen can be limited, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • Note: Operating times and frequency may vary depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the latest timetable on the Iyotetsu official website or on-site information before visiting.

  • Estimated time for riding only: 20 to 30 minutes for a one-way ride, and 40 to 60 minutes for a round trip.

Nearby spots

  • Dogo Onsen Main Building: One of Japan's most historic hot spring buildings. Located near the terminus of the Botchan Train, many tourists visit both places.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded during tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, consecutive holidays, weekends). Seating is limited, so please plan ahead.
  • Seating and boarding: The carriages are retro in design and may have steps and narrow aisles. There may be restrictions on boarding with strollers or wheelchairs, so please check in advance.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography is permitted, but please be considerate to other passengers and passersby. Be especially careful when using tripods in stations and narrow alleys.
  • Food, drink and garbage: Please refrain from eating or drinking in your vehicle or leaving large luggage unattended. Please take your garbage home or dispose of it in designated areas.
  • Weather: Matsuyama is relatively warm, but it can get hot in the summer, so be sure to stay hydrated and take precautions against heatstroke. In the winter, be aware of temperature differences and frozen roads (please take care when dressing and walking when sightseeing).
  • Check operation information: Services may be suspended or replaced due to events or inspections. Please check the official Iyotetsu Railway announcement before visiting.

Finally, the Botchan Train is a photogenic tourist train that pairs perfectly with sightseeing in Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama. Please check the official website for the latest operating times, fares, and boarding rules, and make sure you leave plenty of time before boarding.
