Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Karatsu Castle (also known as Maizuru Castle) is a castle built on Mount Maizuru (approximately 30-40m above sea level) in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and its greatest attraction is its seaside location overlooking Karatsu Bay. The castle was constructed in the early Edo period and was placed in a strategic location overlooking the castle town as the castle of the Karatsu domain. Like many Japanese castles, it became difficult to maintain the castle properly after the Meiji Restoration, and the castle tower no longer exists. However, a reinforced concrete reconstruction was made during the Showa period and is open to the public as a museum and observation deck.

The castle commands a panoramic view of Karatsu Bay, Niji-no-Matsubara, and even the Genkai Sea in the distance, so many people visit for the scenery, and the seasonal views of the cherry blossoms in spring, the autumn leaves, and the sunset at dusk are especially popular. The castle also has stone walls, tower remains, and an area where historical documents are exhibited, making it a great place to learn about the history and culture of Karatsu.

Highlights

  • The castle tower (reconstructed castle tower) and exhibits of materials from inside: Historical materials, models, and ancient documents from Karatsu Castle are on display, and you can enjoy a nearly 360-degree panoramic view from the observation deck on the top floor.
  • Maizuruyama stone walls and castle ruins: You can stroll around the remains of stone walls, earthworks, and moats that retain the atmosphere of an Edo period castle.
  • Cherry blossoms and the park scenery: Maizuru Park, which surrounds the castle, is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and in spring it becomes a spectacular spot to see the castle through the cherry blossoms.
  • Sunset and seascape: The sunset over Karatsu Bay and the seascape beyond Niji-no-Matsubara are popular photo spots.
  • Seasonal events: The castle is also a base for local events such as the Karatsu Kunchi festival in November, which brings excitement to the area around the castle (it gets very crowded during these events).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station:
    • JR Karatsu Station (JR Chikuhi Line/Karatsu Line): You can also walk from the station (approximately 20-30 minutes on foot, some slopes).
    • Nishikaratsu Station (Chikuhi Line): You may need to transfer depending on the line.
  • Bus/Taxi: Access is convenient from Karatsu Station by local bus or taxi. The taxi ride takes about a few minutes to 10 minutes (depending on traffic conditions).
  • By car: From Fukuoka or Nagasaki, use local roads and expressways. There are paid parking lots and municipal parking lots around Maizuru Park, but they may fill up during the tourist season, so it is recommended to arrive early.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The castle gets very crowded during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, summer tourist season, and festivals such as the Karatsu Kunchi festival. Parking lots may fill up and you may have to wait to enter the castle, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Clothing and footing: The castle has many slopes and stone steps, which can be slippery depending on the weather. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
  • Check facility information: The castle tower's opening hours, closing days, and admission fees may change. Please check the official website or tourist information for the latest information before visiting (especially during the New Year holidays and other temporary closures).
  • Photography and Handling of Exhibits: Some exhibits in the museum are prohibited from photography or flash photography. Please follow the instructions of the facility, such as not touching exhibits and refraining from eating or drinking outside of designated areas.
  • Protect the natural environment: The park is a public park. Please take your trash home with you and observe etiquette by not touching plants or stone walls. The use of drones may be restricted.
  • Seasonal precautions: In summer, take precautions against sunshine and heatstroke (wear a hat and stay hydrated), and in winter, take precautions against the cold as there may be strong winds and cold days.
