Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Fukiya Furusato Village is a tourist destination in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture (formerly Nariwa Town), known for its traditional townscape and industrial heritage. The area flourished during the Edo and Meiji periods thanks to its mining and pigment (bengara) industries, and its exterior walls made of the reddish-brown pigment bengara, as well as its red roof tiles and stone walls, have created a unique landscape. Old merchant houses, storehouses, earthen storehouses, stone bridges and stone-paved roads have been preserved, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of having traveled back in time. It is recognized as an important historical building and townscape preservation area, and its major attractions are its photogenic scenery and the opportunity to experience local life.
Highlights
- Strolling around the town: You can enjoy the atmosphere just by walking through the area, where reddish-brown buildings, storehouses, and cobblestone streets continue. The light and the color of the red iron oxide are especially beautiful on sunny days.
– Fukiya Furusato Village Museum and Exhibition Facility: Learn about the origins of the region through historical materials on local industries (red ochre and mining), everyday items, and photographs.
- Old houses and storehouses: You can tour preserved merchant houses and old houses (open buildings can be toured inside) and learn about architectural styles and lifestyles.
- Viewpoints: There are plenty of photo spots scattered around, including hills overlooking the town, stone slopes, and old bridges. The scenery changes with each season (fresh greenery in spring, autumn leaves, and the tranquil scenery in winter).
- Experiences and Shopping: There are shops selling local specialties, bengala-related souvenirs, and handicrafts, making it a great place to look for souvenirs.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest public transportation: JR Bitchu-Takahashi Station (Hakubi Line, Bitchu-Takahashi Station) is the starting point, and you can take a local bus or taxi. From the station, it takes about 40 to 60 minutes by local bus (bound for Fukiya or Kawakami), or about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi. There are few buses running, so we recommend checking the timetable.
- By car: From Okayama or Kurashiki, it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours (depending on the departure point) using regular roads and mountain roads. There is a parking lot on-site, but the number of spaces is limited, so it is best to arrive early during peak season.
- Tours and sightseeing buses: Day trips that combine Takahashi city and surrounding tourist spots are sometimes operated. Since public transportation is inconvenient, visiting by car or tour is more convenient.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Short tour: about 1 hour (take a quick stroll around the main streets and take photos)
– Standard stay: 2-3 hours (including visiting the museum, the interior of the old house, and souvenir shops)
- If you want to take it easy and explore the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (combined with visiting nearby historical sites and sightseeing spots in Takahashi City)
Nearby spots
- Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (Takahashi City): One of the surviving mountain castle towers. Many tourists visit it in combination with Fukiya.
– Takahashi City Museum of History and Art, downtown: Convenient for touring the castle town atmosphere and museums.
– Nariwa Museum and Nariwa Satoyama Area: Experience nature and local culture.
– Surrounding valleys and hiking trails: There are many spots where you can enjoy seasonal scenery.
Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
– Public transportation is limited: Buses run infrequently, so check the timetable in advance or consider using a car or taxi.
- Many alleys and slopes: There are many stone steps, steep slopes, and narrow roads, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. There are some places where it may be difficult to navigate with a stroller or wheelchair.
– Parking/Crowding: It tends to get crowded on weekends, public holidays, during the autumn foliage season, and during consecutive holidays, and the parking lot may fill up. It is best to arrive early or visit on a weekday.
- Consideration for buildings and private property: Old houses and storehouses may still be inhabited or managed. Please do not enter the premises without permission, and be mindful of privacy and property preservation when taking photographs.
- Precautions for weathering and preservation: Do not touch or graffiti the storehouse or paint (red ochre) as they deteriorate easily.
- Weather and clothing: As this is a mountainous area, the weather can change drastically. It is a good idea to prepare clothing appropriate for the season, including rain gear and warm clothes.
- Pets: In the Townscape Preservation Zone, you must be considerate of other pedestrians and your surroundings. Please clean up any droppings and keep your pet on a leash.
