Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Fukiwarenotaki is a scenic waterfall located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture (part of the Katashina-Tone River system), and is also known as the "Niagara of the Orient" due to its wide, unique landscape of cracked rock. The soft rocks (such as tuff and andesite) deposited by volcanic activity have been eroded by years of flowing water, forming fissures and gorges, creating a dynamic landscape where the waterfall and the valley come together. The waterfall's appearance changes with the seasons, and it is especially popular with tourists during the vibrant colors of the new greenery and autumn foliage seasons.
Highlights
- Main waterfall and broken rock face: This is an observation spot where you can see the wide waterfall flowing in steps, as well as the fissures in the valley (Fukiware) from above and the side.
- Walking trails and observation decks: There are well-maintained walking trails and multiple observation decks, allowing you to view and photograph the waterfall and gorge from different angles. The powerful sound of the spray and splashing water is also a highlight.
- The scenery changes with the seasons: the fresh greenery of spring, the clear streams of summer, the autumn leaves, and the frozen scenery of winter (which can sometimes freeze over in parts) all have their own unique charm and make for great photos.
- Photo spots: There are vantage points for capturing the full view of the falls below, as well as a spot where you can descend into the gorge and get a feel for the rushing water up close (follow safety signs).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Joetsu Line Numata Station is the main entrance (you can travel from the station by bus or car).
- Bus: There is a local bus (tourist route) from Numata Station heading towards Fukiware Falls. The number of buses varies depending on the season and day of the week, so we recommend checking in advance. It is a few minutes to 10 minutes' walk from the bus stop to the entrance of the promenade.
- By car: Approximately 20-30 minutes on local roads from Numata IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway. There is a paid parking lot (for standard cars) on-site. It may fill up during peak hours, so we recommend arriving early.
- Taxi: Taking a taxi from Numata Station is also convenient, taking about 20-30 minutes (depending on road conditions).
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short viewing time: If you just want to view the waterfall from the observation deck, it will take about 30 minutes.
- Including a stroll around the area: It will take about 1-2 hours to walk the promenade and back, including taking photos and taking breaks.
- Leisurely sightseeing (including visiting nearby hot springs and other spots): Half a day to a full day.
Nearby spots
- Oze (Katashina and Oze National Park area) - Famous for hiking and marshland observation. Easy to combine as a base for spring to autumn access.
- Oigami Onsen — A hot spring resort accessible by car. A convenient place to soak after visiting the waterfall.
- Numata Castle Ruins Park (Numata City) — A famous spot for castle ruins and cherry blossoms. A great place to visit in Numata City.
- Nature and trekking courses around Katashina Village - Enjoy nature in all four seasons.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Golden Week, summer tourist season, autumn foliage season, and weekends are very crowded and the parking lot tends to fill up. However, it is relatively empty if you visit early in the morning or on a weekday.
- Safety precautions: There are slippery sections of the paths and stairs. There is a risk of slipping and falling, especially after rain or in winter, so please wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing. Never enter fenced or restricted areas.
- Manners: Always take your trash home with you and act in a way that protects the natural environment. Shouting and making noise will be a nuisance to those around you.
- Drones/Photography: There may be restrictions on drone flying. Avoid flying drones without permission or for commercial photography, and if necessary, please check for permission in advance.
- When the water level rises: After heavy rain, the water level rises and flows very quickly, making it dangerous. Avoid descending to the riverbank or near waterfalls, and pay close attention to the latest weather information.
- Facility information: While there are parking lots, toilets, and shops, opening hours and days may be limited. Please check in advance as they may not be available, especially in winter or early in the morning.
