Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nagoya Castle Ruins is the site of a castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a base for his invasion of Korea (the Bunroku-Keicho War, 1592-1598). Today, stone walls, earthen platforms for enclosures, and remains of moats remain, along with traces of the numerous feudal lord camps and military bases of the time, preserving the remains over a wide area. The castle ruins have been designated a national historic site, and the Nagoya Castle Museum has been built nearby, where you can learn about the Toyotomi government's policies towards Kyushu and Korea through excavated artifacts and records and documents from that time.

Highlights

  • Remains of stone walls and earthworks: You can see the structure that shows the castle's layout (layout) at the time, as well as the remains of the stone walls up close.
  • Remains of Daimyo Camps: Remains of the camps (foundations of forts and mansions) where many Daimyo set up camps are scattered around, and you can see their strategic placement.
  • Nagoya Castle Museum: The historical background of Nagoya Castle and the Korean War is explained in detail through displays of excavated items, drawings, and documents (special exhibitions are held regularly).
  • Observation spot: If the weather is good, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Genkai Sea and the surrounding islands. You can really appreciate the strategic topography that overlooks the sea.
  • Walking trails and information boards: Information boards explaining the remains and walking trails have been established, allowing you to learn about historical facts while viewing the historic sites.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: JR Karatsu Station (Karatsu Line). It is quite far from the station and public transportation is limited, so it is more convenient to use the bus or car.
  • Bus: You can take the local bus bound for Nagoya Castle Ruins and Nagoya Castle Museum from Karatsu Station or Hizen Kashima (this may not be seasonal or may run less frequently). Please check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: From Saga City or Fukuoka, it takes about 40 to 60 minutes via expressways and national highways (this may vary depending on your starting point). There is a parking lot next to the museum (please check whether it is free or paid depending on the season).
  • Bicycles and rental cars: If you plan to explore the surrounding area, we recommend renting a car. Bicycles are also possible, but please take into consideration the terrain and distance.
  • Check official information: Bus times, parking information, and museum opening hours may change, so please check the latest information on the Nagoya Castle Museum and Karatsu City official websites before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Tour of the main ruins + museum: 1.5 to 3 hours (more than 2 hours if you want to take your time to look at the museum exhibits)
  • A leisurely stroll around the surrounding feudal lord camps and observation points: Half a day (3-4 hours)
  • If you are combining sightseeing with other nearby attractions: We recommend the one-day course (combining it with Karatsu Castle, Rainbow Pine Grove, Yobuko, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Nagoya Castle Museum: Exhibits explaining the castle ruins and excavated artifacts. If you stop by first, you'll get an overall picture and it will be easier to tour.
  • Karatsu Castle (Maizuru Castle): Located in the center of Karatsu city, this castle is perfect for touring the history of Karatsu together with Nagoya Castle.
  • Rainbow Pine Grove: One of Japan's three largest pine groves and a scenic spot. A popular driving course.
  • Yobuko (morning market, squid dishes): Enjoy fresh seafood and the famous live squid (seasonal opening hours).
  • Genkai Quasi-National Park and Genkai Sea Scenic Spots: There are many places where you can enjoy the ocean views.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Wear comfortable clothing: The ruins have many slopes and uneven terrain, and some paths are unpaved. Please wear non-slip shoes.
  • Weather and protection from the cold and sun: The wind can be strong along the coast, with cold winds in winter and strong sunlight in summer, so be sure to bring a hat and other cold weather gear.
  • Museum and facility hours: Museum opening and closing days may change. Please check in advance for information on temporary closures and exhibit changes.
  • Crowds: Surrounding roads and parking lots may be congested during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, etc. Please consider using public transportation or leaving early.
  • Manners for protecting the ruins: Do not climb on the ruins, do not move stones, and do not graffiti or collect anything. Please follow the signs and "No Trespassing" signs.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Flying drones is restricted or prohibited at many historic sites. Please check and obtain permission in advance.
  • Food and Drinks/Toilets: As there are limited food and drink options on-site, it's a good idea to bring some drinks and snacks. Also, be sure to check the location and opening hours of the restrooms.

Before visiting, be sure to check the latest opening hours and access information on the official websites of Nagoya Castle Museum and Karatsu City. Walk through this historical site and experience the atmosphere of the Toyotomi era.
