Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Meiji Mura Museum is an open-air museum that preserves and exhibits architecture and lifestyles from the Meiji period (late 19th century to early 20th century). Its main feature is that it brings together precious buildings that were at risk of demolition or destruction, relocated and restored from all over the country, allowing visitors to experience the townscape and lifestyle of the time. The museum features a wide variety of exhibits, including Western-style architecture, a blend of Japanese and Western styles, churches, schools, government offices, merchant houses, and even railways and steam locomotives, making it popular not only with those interested in architectural history and lifestyle history, but also with families and photography enthusiasts.

Highlights

  • Relocated and restored buildings: You can see over 60 buildings from the Meiji to Taisho periods that were relocated from all over the country. The contrast between Western-style buildings influenced by foreign architects and traditional Japanese architecture is fascinating.
  • Imperial Hotel central entrance (part of Frank Lloyd Wright's design): One of Meiji Village's most notable exhibits, this allows you to observe Wright's architectural designs up close.
  • Preserved streetscape and lifestyle exhibits: Shops, schools, town halls, etc. from that time have been recreated, and the furniture, furnishings, and exhibits that were used at the time give a glimpse into how people lived.
  • Experiences and vehicle exhibits: On some days there are exhibits and demonstrations where you can actually ride the trams and steam locomotives that run through the park (there may be days when they are operational and there is a fee).
  • Seasonal EventsSeasonal events are also attractive, including seasonal scenery of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, nighttime illuminations, special exhibitions and workshops.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Meitetsu "Inuyama Station" or "Inuyama-Yuen Station". It takes about 30 minutes by Meitetsu from Nagoya (depending on the train type).
  • bus: Shuttle buses or local buses run from Inuyama Station and Inuyama-Yuen Station to the Museum Meiji Village (takes about 10-15 minutes; check the official website for the number of buses and schedules).
  • car: Convenient access from the Tomei and Meishin Expressways, approximately 20-40 minutes from the nearest interchange (depending on traffic conditions). Parking available (fees apply).
  • others: There are access routes for groups and tours, and special routes during events, so it is best to check official information in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Estimated tour time: Half a day (approximately 3 hours) to a full day (approximately 5-6 hours).
  • If you want to take your time to look at the architecture and exhibits, ride the rides in the park, and enjoy the food and events, we recommend staying a day.

Nearby spots

  • Inuyama Castle: The view from the castle tower, designated a national treasure, is captivating. It is close to the Meiji Village Museum, and many people visit both places together.
  • Yurakuen (tea room/Joan): A tea room associated with the tea ceremony has been preserved, and you can enjoy strolling through the garden and experiencing a tea ceremony.
  • Castle town/Shopping street: Inuyama's castle town area has traditional streets, souvenir shops, and local gourmet restaurants.
  • Parks and museums around Meiji Mura:There are also local tourist facilities and natural spots scattered around the area, so if you have time, we recommend taking a tour around the area.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The park tends to be crowded on weekends, national holidays, Golden Week, cherry blossom and autumn foliage season, and summer vacation. Public transportation and parking lots may be crowded, and you may have to wait to enter.
  • What to wear and what to bring: As this is an outdoor museum, we recommend that you dress appropriately for the weather (rain gear, cold weather gear, hat, sun protection) and wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Manners for touring the building: As many of the buildings retain their original interiors, please be aware that there are areas where eating and drinking are prohibited, and that running is prohibited, and that photography may vary depending on the building.
  • Barrier-free access and steps: Due to the nature of historical buildings, there are many stairs, steps, and narrow passageways, making it difficult to fully view some areas in a wheelchair. Please inquire in advance for details on access or if you require assistance.
  • Admission and business information: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, and event information may change depending on the season and events. Please check the official website for the latest information before visiting.

(Additional Information) For detailed information on opening hours, admission fees, schedules and events, please check the latest information on the official website of the Museum Meiji Mura.
