Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Senjojiki Cirque is a glacial landform (a cirque) in the Central Alps (around Mt. Kiso-Komagatake) located in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture. Its unique landscape, combining a wide rocky area carved by glaciers with a grassland of alpine plants, is captivating, and as its name "Senjojiki" suggests, a vast expanse of land stretches out before your eyes. The Komagatake Ropeway takes you up to an altitude of around 2,600m in one go, making it a popular spot for even beginners to enjoy the alpine scenery, alpine plants, and remaining snow in a short amount of time. It is also the starting point for hiking routes, making it a popular base for climbing and traversing Mt. Kiso-Komagatake (Komagatake).
Highlights
- Panoramic mountain views: A 360-degree view of the peaks of the Central Alps and neighboring mountain ranges.
- Alpine plants: From spring to summer, alpine plants such as dicentra, aleutiana, and anemone bloom.
- Remaining snow and snowfields (spring to early summer): During the remaining snow season, the contrast between the snow corridors and white snow fields and the blue sky is beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
- Autumn foliage: Enjoy the colors that change with the altitude, and the best time to see them is usually around September to October.
- Mountain huts and trailheads: There are routes for serious hikes to Mt. Kisokoma (several hours round trip) and short walking routes.

- Crowds: The ropeway and parking lot are extremely crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, and the autumn foliage season. We recommend leaving early in the morning, using it on a weekday, and checking the schedule in advance.
- Weather changes: The weather on the mountain can change suddenly, with strong winds, fog, and temperature fluctuations. Be sure to bring warm clothing, rain gear, and non-slip shoes.
- Countermeasures against altitude sickness: Because the altitude increases in a short period of time, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches and dizziness. Please take your time and make sure to take breaks and hydrate.
- Climbing equipment: If you are planning to go hiking, be sure to bring sufficient equipment (warm clothing, hiking boots, map, food, headlamp, etc.) and plan accordingly to prepare for sunset and bad weather.
- Plant and animal protection: Alpine plants are fragile. Do not trample or take them home. Please stay on the designated trails.
- Check access information: The ropeway may be suspended due to strong winds or snowfall. Be sure to check the official information in advance to confirm the timetable and operation status of public transport.
