Lake Senba is a lake surrounded by parks in the center of Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and is a popular place for local residents to relax. Promenades and plazas have been developed along the lakeside, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery throughout the seasons. Highlights include cherry blossoms and plum blossoms in the spring, autumn leaves, and migrating waterfowl in the winter. Along with the nearby Kairakuen Garden and Kodokan, the lake is popular as a historical and natural walking spot. There are boats, benches, and grassy areas, making it a great place for a variety of activities, including walking, jogging, picnics, and bird watching.

  • Lakeside promenade: The circular walkway is perfect for strolling or jogging. It's a comfortable and refreshing walk.
  • Waterfowl ObservationIn winter, migratory birds such as ducks and grebes visit the area, making it a great place to go bird watching. There are places where you can see them up close, but please be mindful of the wildlife.
  • Boating: Rental boats (swan boats and pedal boats) are available for certain periods. Families and couples can enjoy the scenery from the lake at their leisure (operating hours vary depending on the season and weather).
  • Flower LandscapeIn spring, the cherry blossoms and plum blossoms of the nearby Kairakuen Garden are spectacular, attracting many visitors. The greenery of summer and the autumn leaves are also beautifully reflected on the lake surface.
  • Photo Spot: Suitable for capturing landscapes across the lake, waterfowl, and the changing seasons. The light in the morning and evening, and on foggy days, creates a particularly atmospheric effect.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Railway: The nearest major station is Mito Station on the JR Joban Line. From Mito Station, you can walk (about 20-30 minutes) or take a local bus. If you are taking the bus, please take one bound for Kairakuen or Senba Lake.
  • busFrom the north exit of Mito Station, take the bus bound for Kairakuen or the city loop bus to the bus stop near Lake Senba. We recommend checking the route and schedule in advance.
  • carTake the Joban Expressway from Mito IC towards the city. There are paid and free parking lots around the lake, but they tend to fill up during events and cherry blossom viewing season.
  • Bicycle/walk: It is easily accessible by bicycle or on foot from the city center, making it convenient to combine your visit with other sightseeing spots in the surrounding area (Kairakuen Garden and Kodokan).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • A quick walk around the lake: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Relaxing, taking photos and resting on benches: 1-2 hours
  • If you are visiting Kairakuen and Kodokan together: Half a day (2-4 hours) to a full day
  • Including boat ride and picnic: 2-3 hours

Nearby spots

  • Kairakuen Garden: One of the three most famous gardens in Japan. Famous for its plum blossoms, you can enjoy seasonal flowers.
  • Kodokan: This was the domain school of the Mito domain, and is a spot where historical buildings and gardens remain. Many people visit it together with Kairakuen Garden.
  • Art Tower Mito: A cultural facility that hosts contemporary art and music performances (accessible by foot, bicycle, or bus).
  • Shopping and gourmet around Mito Station: You can enjoy local cuisine and local delicacies such as Mito natto.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The surrounding area is extremely crowded during the spring cherry blossom and plum blossom season and during long weekends. Parking lots tend to fill up quickly, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Consideration for wildlifeFeeding waterfowl is unhealthy and undesirable for the ecosystem. Please observe good manners by not getting too close and observing quietly.
  • No trash or fire allowed: Please be sure to take your trash with you when you leave the park, and please check the rules as barbecues and open fires are prohibited in many areas.
  • Weather and Seasonal Caution: In winter, the path along the lake may freeze over and become slippery, so please be careful. In summer, take measures against insects (especially in the evening) and strong sunlight. Boats will not operate in bad weather.

Lake Senba is close to the city and is a great spot to easily enjoy the natural beauty of the four seasons. Enjoy a stroll around the area, along with other nearby attractions such as Kairakuen Garden.
