Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Totsukawa Onsen (Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture) is a hot spring resort that springs up in a deep valley in the Kii Mountains. Located in southern Nara Prefecture, Totsukawa Village is attractive for its scenery surrounded by deep mountain nature and clear streams. It has long been popular with locals as a therapeutic hot spring resort, and each village is dotted with inns that preserve their own unique hot spring water quality and therapeutic hot spring culture. The entire village is rich in nature, and its greatest feature is that you can enjoy the beauty of the valley, the starry sky, and the changing scenery of the seasons (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, snowscapes).
Highlights
- Free-flowing hot springs: Each inn has different spring quality and bath atmosphere, and some even offer views of the mountain stream from their open-air baths. You can enjoy a relaxing and healing hot spring experience.
- Tanize Suspension Bridge (nearby): A representative tourist spot in Totsukawa Village, you can enjoy the view of the valley by crossing the long suspension bridge (you can also cross the bridge on foot). It is a popular photo spot.
- Kumano Kodo (Ohechi, etc.): The Kumano Kodo route, a registered World Heritage Site, is nearby, making it a good base for hiking and historical walks. Many people enjoy walking along mountain paths and ancient roads.
- Valley and nature walks: Enjoy the natural scenery of each season, including the clear streams and waterfalls of the Totsukawa Valley, forest scenery, playing in the river in summer, and the autumn leaves.
- Local food culture: Experience the local flavor through local cuisine made with mountain delicacies (venison, river fish, wild vegetables, etc.) and homemade dishes prepared at the inn.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
There are no train lines in Totsukawa Village, so even for public transportation, you will often need to use buses or cars. Below are some of the main ways to get there.
- By car: Access via National Route 168, etc. Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Osaka, and approximately 2 hours from Nara (depending on traffic, weather, and congestion). As it is a mountainous area, there are sections with narrow roads and many curves.
- Train + Bus: Take a local bus or village bus from the nearest major station (e.g., a station on the JR line). Buses are infrequent, so please check the timetable in advance.
- Expressway buses and sightseeing buses: Direct buses and special services may operate depending on the season and tours. Direct buses from Osaka and Nara are limited, so if your accommodation has a shuttle service, it is convenient to inquire.
Note: Public transport services are limited, and schedules and road conditions may be affected during winter and bad weather. Please be sure to check the latest timetables and road information.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day-trip bathing only: Bathing and walking around the area takes about 2-4 hours. If you include meals, you may need to allow a little more time.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Transportation availability and frequency: Public transportation (routed buses) are infrequent, so please check in advance whether there are return trips or pick-up services. This is especially inconvenient at night and on weekdays.
- Road conditions in mountainous areas: National and prefectural roads are mountain roads, and there is a possibility of snow accumulation, ice, and road closures in winter. Be sure to bring winter gear (studless tires and chains) and check road conditions.
- Busy periods: Accommodations and tourist spots can be crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and the New Year holidays, so it is best to make reservations early.
- Onsen etiquette: Please observe general onsen etiquette, such as pouring your own water over yourself before bathing, not putting towels in the bathtub, and not monopolizing the bath for long periods of time. Some accommodations and facilities have rules regarding mixed bathing and private baths, so be sure to check in advance.
- Consideration for the natural environment: Mountains and streams are delicate environments. Please observe basic etiquette, such as always taking your trash with you and being considerate of vegetation and wildlife.
- Check the latest information: Road conditions, bus schedules, and accommodation availability may change due to seasons or natural disasters, so please check the official information from Totsukawa Village Office, accommodations, and transportation providers before setting off.
