Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Towada Art Center is a contemporary art center located in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture, where it hosts exhibitions and exchanges that connect local residents with artists from Japan and abroad. Opened in the 2000s (please check the official website for the opening year), the museum is known for showcasing contemporary art themed around the relationship between the local area, nature, and urban space through permanent and special exhibitions. The building and exhibition space are designed to incorporate light and scenery, and there are many large-scale indoor-outdoor installations and site-specific works, making it an appealing experience where art blends into everyday life.

Highlights

  • Permanent Exhibition: Presents perspectives on Towada's nature, history, and contemporary society through works from the museum's collection and related to the region.
  • Special Exhibitions: Special exhibitions featuring notable artists from Japan and abroad are held regularly, allowing visitors to view popular works and large-scale installations.
  • Outdoor sculptures and public art: Sculptures and installations that make use of the space both inside and outside the premises. The appeal is that their appearance changes with the seasons and weather.
  • Workshop and Atelier Program: There are workshops that anyone, from children to adults, can participate in, deepening their understanding of art through experience.
  • Museum Shop & Cafe: Many museums have cafes where you can enjoy books and merchandise related to the exhibition, as well as menus made with local ingredients.

  • Train + Bus/Taxi: The nearest Shinkansen station is Shichinohe-Towada Station. From there, you can access central Towada City by local bus, airport limousine, or taxi. There are also routes available from Hachinohe Station or Aomori Station by local bus or express bus. Please check the timetable and operating status of each route in advance.
  • Car: Access is convenient via the Tohoku Expressway and local roads. There are often visitor parking lots in the surrounding area, making travel by car relatively easy. The estimated travel times from major cities are as follows (this may vary depending on road conditions):
  • ・From Hachinohe City: Approximately 1 hour (by car)
  • ・From Aomori City: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours (by car)

  • If you want to take your time to appreciate the exhibits, participate in a workshop, and use the cafe: Half a day (3-4 hours)

  • Food and drink: Eating and drinking inside the building is usually limited to cafes and rest areas. Please dispose of trash in the designated areas.
