Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kakeroma Island is one of the inhabited islands of the Amami Islands, part of Setouchi Town, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. With a subtropical climate, it's a quiet, remote island dotted with white-sand beaches, crystal-clear coral reefs, lush green forests, and small villages, allowing you to experience island time. Historically, Amami's unique "shima" (island) culture has remained strong, with each village passing down its lifestyle, festivals, and dialects. While the island faces the impact of the postwar U.S. military occupation and the challenges of depopulation and aging in recent years, it has attracted attention for its ecotourism and diving, which utilizes its natural environment and traditions.
Highlights
- Clear waters and beaches: There are many white sand beaches and private coves where you can easily see coral and tropical fish while snorkeling.
- Stroll through traditional villages: Walking through villages with their old houses, stone walls, and alleyways, you can get a sense of island life and the warmth of the people.
- Viewpoints and Trekking: There are observation decks and high points overlooking the sea that can be reached in a short distance, and the views from the cliffs are spectacular. You can enjoy the island's nature with a light trek.
- Diving and snorkeling: There are plenty of coral reefs and diverse marine life, and there are plenty of spots for fun diving and trial diving (it's recommended to check with a guide in advance).
- Island food culture: Enjoy home-cooked meals and local cuisine made with local seafood and island vegetables. The highlight of your trip is the meals at a simple guesthouse.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
There is no railway on the island, so the most common way to get there is by boat (ferry or high-speed boat) from Amami Oshima.
- Nearest airport: Amami Airport (Amami Oshima). Travel overland from Amami Airport to the port and take a ferry to Kakeroma Island.
- Major ports: Ferries and high-speed boats operate from Koniya Port on the Amami Oshima side to various ports on Kakeroma Island. The travel time varies depending on the flight and port, but most flights take around 10 to 40 minutes.
- Traveling to Amami Oshima: Travel from Amami Airport to Koniya by car (rental car or shuttle) or local bus. The travel time will vary depending on the route and traffic conditions, but you should expect it to take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours from the airport to Koniya.
- Island Transportation: There are few regular bus services, so it is convenient to travel between settlements by rental car (limited availability), bicycle, moped, or taxi. Your accommodation may also be able to arrange transportation and sightseeing.
- Importance of checking in advance: Ferry and high-speed boat services may be reduced or canceled depending on the weather and season. Be sure to check the timetable and operation status in advance.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: Yes, but it takes time to travel (Amami side ⇄ island), so you can only do a short trip. You can only quickly visit the main beaches and villages.
- 2 days, 1 night: This plan is perfect for experiencing the island atmosphere, relaxing on the beach, exploring the village, and enjoying snorkeling nearby.
- 2-3 nights: You can enjoy multiple points on the island (multiple beaches, trekking, diving) with plenty of time. If you want to relax and enjoy island time, we recommend staying 2-3 nights or more.
Nearby spots
- Amami Oshima (Kuniya and Naze): The gateway to Kakeroma Island, it offers sightseeing, dining, and accommodation options unique to Amami.
- Nearby remote islands such as Ukejima and Yorojima: Other remote islands belonging to Setouchi Town may also be accessible by boat (please check the season and operation status).
- Amami's natural spots: Expand the scope of your trip by combining an island tour with the mangroves, waterfalls, and observation decks of Amami Oshima.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Restrictions on operation and access: Ferries and high-speed boats may be canceled or delayed due to weather and sea conditions, so be sure to allow ample time for your itinerary and check alternative means. Be especially careful during typhoon season (summer to autumn).
- Facilities and Shopping: There are often only a limited number of shops and ATMs on the island, so it's a good idea to bring cash and purchase any necessary items on the Amami side.
- Environmental conservation and etiquette: Please be mindful of protecting nature by not touching the coral or living creatures, always taking your trash home with you (or to designated areas), and not leaving any marine debris in the sea.
- Consideration for local residents: Do not enter residential areas or private property without permission, avoid noise at night, and ask permission before filming.
- Health and safety precautions: As medical facilities are limited, please bring plenty of medication for chronic illnesses, avoid swimming alone in the ocean, and we recommend wearing a life jacket and being accompanied by a guide.
- Seasonal clothing: In summer, you need to protect yourself from strong sunlight, high temperatures, humidity, and insects. In winter, the sea breeze can be cold, though not as cold as on the mainland, so it's useful to have a jacket.
Kakeroma Island is an attractive place with abundant nature and a quiet island lifestyle. Please check access and accommodation arrangements, as well as sea and weather information in advance, and enjoy a relaxing stay while respecting the island's rules.
