Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Maruyama Zoo is an urban zoo located within the lush Maruyama Park in Sapporo, and is a facility that conducts educational and conservation activities rooted in the local community. It opened shortly after the war and has been popular with local residents and tourists for many years. The zoo features many exhibits that make use of the natural undulations, exhibits of animals adapted to cold climates in consideration of Hokkaido's climate, and a focus on breeding and conservation programs for rare species. There are also educational programs for children, seasonal events, explanatory panels to learn about animal ecology, and guided tours by animal care staff.

Highlights

  • Exhibits of cold-climate marine mammals such as polar bears and seals: You can easily observe their winter behavior and watch them swim and play with great force.
  • Red pandas and monkeys: Their adorable behavior is popular, and you can observe them in outdoor exhibits and in the trees.
  • Exhibits featuring endemic species and regional characteristics of Japan: Learn about animals associated with Hokkaido and species that are subject to conservation through exhibits.
  • Children's areas and interactive programs: There are often interactive programs and information sessions held according to the season or event (please check availability).
  • Strolling through the nature-rich park: Adjacent to the forest of Maruyama Park, you can enjoy walks and picnics in between observing the animals.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By subway: The hotel is within walking distance from the nearest subway station (there is a slight uphill walk from the station).
  • Bus: There are city bus routes from JR Sapporo Station and the Odori area. You can walk to the park from the bus stop.
  • By car: There is parking available around the park, but it is crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons due to limited space. We recommend using public transportation.
  • Note: Please check the official website or the latest transportation information before visiting for access details (nearest station name, bus stop name, travel time, parking information, barrier-free information, etc.).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 1-2 hours (just a quick look at the main exhibits)
  • For thorough observation and program participation: 2-4 hours (including explanation sessions and breaks)
  • Relaxing with the family: Half a day (more if you include strolling around the parks and mealtimes)

Nearby spots

  • Maruyama Park: A vast park where you can enjoy nature in all four seasons. Perfect for strolls and picnics.
  • Hokkaido Shrine: This historic shrine near Maruyama Park is a great place to visit and enjoy a stroll through the gardens.
  • Nearby cafes and restaurants: There are many restaurants and cafes scattered around the park, making it a convenient place to take a break during your visit to the zoo.
  • Seasonal attractions (cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves, etc.): You can also enjoy the scenery by visiting Maruyama Park.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park is crowded with visitors on weekends, during the cherry blossom season in spring, Golden Week, and summer vacation, and parking lots and popular exhibits can get crowded. However, visiting on weekdays or right after opening can provide a more relaxed experience.
  • Manners: Please observe basic zoo etiquette, such as not climbing over fences or glass, not feeding or littering, not shouting at the animals to surprise them, and avoiding flash photography.
  • Weather and season precautions: Winter in Sapporo is severe and cold, so it is essential to take measures to protect yourself from the cold. On days with poor road conditions or inclement weather, some exhibits may be kept indoors or closed to the public.
  • Opening hours and closing days: As with many zoos, there are fixed closing days (e.g. Mondays) and opening and closing times change depending on the season, so please check the official website in advance.
  • Barrier-free access/strollers: There are slopes and stairs in some areas of the park. If you are using a stroller or wheelchair, we recommend checking the route at the entrance or information desk.
  • Safety and Hygiene: If you are traveling with children, please wash and disinfect your hands thoroughly, and follow the instructions of staff even if contact with animals is permitted.

*The latest opening hours, admission fees, event and exhibition schedules are subject to change. Please be sure to check the official website and the latest facility information before visiting.
