Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is a prefectural contemporary art museum located on Kobe's waterfront. The building, designed by Tadao Ando, is a modern building with a base of exposed concrete, and coupled with its open location overlooking the sea and harbor, the architecture itself is a major attraction. Since opening in the 2000s, the museum has been actively showcasing contemporary art, photography, and design by artists from both within and outside the prefecture, as well as from overseas, allowing visitors to enjoy both its permanent collection and extensive special exhibitions. The museum also has facilities such as a large-scale exhibition space, an outdoor plaza, a cafe, and a museum shop.

Highlights

  • Architecture and scenery: Tadao Ando's distinctive concrete architecture and a location overlooking the harbor. Highly accessible both inside and outside the building, it's recommended for architecture lovers.
  • Permanent collection: Focusing on contemporary art, the museum has a diverse collection including photography and three-dimensional works. You can see exhibits including works by artists with ties to Hyogo.
  • Special exhibitions: Important exhibitions from Japan and abroad are frequently held, so there are different exhibits worth seeing depending on when you visit. Large-scale exhibitions also feature a wide range of exhibits and video works.
  • Workshops and related events: There are many events held here, such as gallery talks, workshops, and lectures, making it a great place for learning and experiencing.
  • Museum Shop and Cafe: There is a shop selling art-related catalogs and design goods, and a cafe serving light meals and drinks, so you can take a break while you're there.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Main access point: Located on the waterfront in Kobe's Chuo Ward (near Meriken Park).
  • By train or on foot:
    • Approximately 15-20 minutes on foot from JR/Hanshin Motomachi Station (travel time varies depending on route)
    • Accessible by foot from JR, Hankyu, and Hanshin Sannomiya Station in 20-30 minutes, or by bus or subway
    • Within walking distance of Minato Motomachi and Harborland stations on the Subway Kaigan Line (subway route) (time may vary depending on the nearest station exit and route)
  • Bus: Take a city bus or a tourist route bus from Sannomiya and get off at the nearest bus stop such as "Meriken Park" or "Minato" and it is a short walk from there.
  • By car: Paid parking is available in the area (limited availability and may be crowded). It may be full on weekends, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Cycling and walking: Perfect to combine with a stroll along the waterfront.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • If a special exhibition (medium-sized) is included: 1.5 to 2.5 hours

  • A half-day plan is recommended, including a visit to the cafe, museum shop, and strolling around the area.

Opening hours and night hours may vary depending on special exhibitions, so be sure to check the official website in advance.
  • Tickets: Popular exhibitions tend to be crowded on weekends and holidays, so if tickets are available online with specific dates and times, we recommend purchasing them in advance.
  • Photography and recording: Photography is prohibited for most exhibits (photography is restricted and flash photography is prohibited within the exhibition rooms). Please follow the signs for each piece.
  • Manners inside the museum: Please observe basic etiquette, such as viewing the exhibits quietly, turning cell phones to silent mode, and not touching the exhibits.
  • Barrier-free: Wheelchair-accessible facilities are available, but it is best to check the details (rental wheelchairs, baby rooms, etc.) in advance.
  • Seasonal Note: Visitors increase during the summer, Golden Week, and New Year holidays. The comfort of outdoor areas varies depending on the season and weather. Please keep the weather in mind when planning outdoor walks.
