Hachijojima (Hachijo Town, Tokyo) (Hachijo Town, Tokyo)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hachijojima is a volcanic island located in the southern part of the Izu Islands, and one of the outlying islands belonging to Tokyo. Its rugged terrain and warm subtropical climate support a rich variety of subtropical plants and marine life. Fishing and agriculture (especially the cultivation of ashitaba) have been thriving on the island since ancient times, and the island retains its unique dialect and folk culture. The island boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the island's symbolic volcanic cone, Hachijo-Fuji, its crystal-clear rocky shores and sandy beaches, and hot springs (including open-air baths along the coast). Enjoy diving, fishing, trekking, hot springs, and local cuisine (fresh seafood and local dishes made with ashitaba).
Highlights
- Hachijo Fuji: A beautiful conical mountain with a hiking trail to the summit, from which you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the entire island and the Pacific Ocean.
- Toshiki and Sokodo coasts: Great spots for diving and snorkeling. The water is very clear and you may encounter tropical fish and sea turtles.
– Hachijo Botanical Garden (or Botanical Garden): A great place to stroll around and see subtropical plants and tropical flowers. Seasonal flowers and fruit trees are also attractive.
- Waterfalls and valleys such as Uramigataki Falls: These natural spots are scattered throughout the island's lush green areas and are perfect for strolling and photography.
– Local History Museum and Folk Crafts: A facility that introduces the island's history, lifestyle, fishing equipment, folk tools, etc. You can learn about the unique lifestyle of Hachijo.
- Hot springs and foot baths: Relax in hot springs and public baths with ocean views. There are also plenty of hot spring inns.
- Food: Fresh seafood (sashimi, simmered), tempura and salads using angelica leaves, and local island cuisine. Local sake and locally processed products are also recommended as souvenirs.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- By plane: Direct flights are available from Tokyo (Haneda Airport) to Hachijojima Airport. The flight time is approximately 45 to 60 minutes (the number of flights varies depending on the season and day of the week). To get to Haneda, please use the various lines (Keikyu, Tokyo Monorail, JR, etc.).
- Boat (ferry/high-speed boat): Regular boats operate from Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal in Tokyo and other locations. The travel time varies greatly depending on the type of boat (overnight express boat, daytime high-speed boat, etc.). Ferries often travel overnight, and times and schedules change depending on the season and weather, so it's important to check in advance.
- Island transportation: Local buses, rental cars, rental motorbikes and bicycles, and taxis are available from the airport and port, but the number of services is less than in urban areas. Renting a car or motorbike is convenient for efficiently touring tourist spots. Public transportation mainly operates in the morning and evening, so we recommend checking the timetable.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: It is possible to make a day trip with an early morning flight from Haneda, but there will be little time for travel and sightseeing will be limited. Considering fatigue and schedule, it is not recommended.
- 2 days, 1 night: A minimal plan to see the main attractions (hiking to Hachijo Fuji, the port area, one beach, botanical garden, and hot springs).
- 2 nights, 3 days: The perfect time to enjoy diving, snorkeling, multiple trekking spots, relaxing in hot springs, and gourmet food.
- 3 nights or more: Ideal for easy travel to nearby islands (such as Aogashima), exploring the island at your leisure, and enjoying fishing and sea activities.
Nearby spots
- Other islands in the Izu Islands (Aogashima, Miyakejima, Mikurajima, etc.): These islands can be reached by connecting from Hachijojima. Please check in advance as it depends on sea conditions and the route.
- Small spots on the island that are often overlooked: local villages and observation points, walks around the fishing port, small local shops and restaurants. If you have time, we recommend experiencing island life in these ways.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Weather and sea conditions: The Izu Islands are easily affected by weather and sea conditions, and cancellations and delays may occur, especially in winter and typhoon season (summer to autumn). Please allow ample time for your trip and be sure to check the latest operating information.
- Nature conservation and etiquette: In many places, collecting coral and other living creatures is prohibited, so when diving or snorkeling, please follow the rules, such as not touching the coral and taking any trash with you.
- Transportation: Buses are infrequent, so it's best to reserve a rental car or motorbike in advance. There are sections of the island with little road lighting at night, so drive carefully.
- Medical care and shopping: Medical institutions, pharmacies, ATMs, and large stores are limited. It is a good idea to prepare your regular medications and necessary daily necessities in advance, and to have some cash on hand (some stores only accept credit cards).
- Crowds: The island itself is rarely overly crowded, but accommodations and diving shops can get busy during the summer swimming season and long weekends. We recommend booking accommodation, boats, and flights early.
- Clothing appropriate for the climate: The climate is warm throughout the year, but it can get cold at the summit and at night. It is useful to bring clothing to protect yourself from the sea breeze and sun (a hat and sunscreen) as well as insect repellent.
