Nyudozaki is a cape located at the northwestern tip of the Oga Peninsula in Oga City, Akita Prefecture. It is known as a viewing spot where you can enjoy the impressive scenery of a white lighthouse and a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan. The dynamic scenery created by the wave-washed reefs and cliffs and the sea breeze is appealing, and the view at sunset is particularly popular among photography enthusiasts. The surrounding area is home to a fishing culture and Namahage folklore, making it a convenient base for sightseeing.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Oga Line "Oga Station" or "Wakimoto Station".
  • Train + Bus: Take the JR train from Akita Station towards Oga (travel time may vary depending on transfers and timetables). From Oga Station or Wakimoto Station, take a local bus or taxi towards Nyudozaki. Buses may run more frequently during the tourist season.
  • By car: Approximately 50-70 minutes from central Akita (depending on traffic conditions and starting point). Parking is available, making it convenient to travel by car.
  • Sightseeing bus tours: You can efficiently visit the main spots by taking a day trip or sightseeing bus around the Oga Peninsula.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: 30 minutes to 1 hour (visiting the area around the lighthouse, taking photos, strolling)
  • Leisurely sightseeing: 1.5 to 3 hours (including meals, sightseeing, and visiting multiple observation spots)
  • Aiming for sunset views: If you plan to take sunset photos, arrive 30 minutes to an hour before sunset to give yourself plenty of time.

  • Oga Onsen: Dotted with hot spring inns, you can soothe your travel fatigue.
  • Oga Aquarium GAO: Exhibits local marine life. Popular with families.

  • Kanpuzan Observatory: A viewing spot with a panoramic view of the Oga Peninsula. Perfect for stopping by on a drive.
  • Coastal fishing villages and restaurants: There are many restaurants serving fresh seafood.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Beware of strong winds and high waves: The cape can be windy and have high waves. It is dangerous to enter the rocky areas, so please follow the signs and fences.
  • Slippery conditions: We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as there are slippery areas due to wet rocks and seaweed.
  • Winter weather: Roads and facilities may be temporarily closed due to snow accumulation, ice, or blizzards. Please check the weather forecast if you are visiting in winter.
  • Crowds: Parking lots and observation spots can get crowded during peak tourist season and at sunset. Please be considerate of others when it gets crowded.
