Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a historic landscape preservation district in the center of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. Along the Kurashiki River, which flourished as a commercial district from the Edo period through the Meiji period, the area still retains its atmospheric streetscape of white-walled storehouses, townhouses with lattice doors, and rows of willow trees. The rows of beautiful white storehouses and the waterfront scenery are particularly symbolic of "beauty," and the area attracts many visitors from both within Japan and overseas as a tourist destination.
It is also an attractive area where culture, art, and town life come together, with the Ohara Museum of Art, Japan's first permanent Western art museum, as well as a folk art museum, craft and souvenir shops, and cafes. The Kurashiki River's rowboats and seasonal scenery (cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and summer greenery) are also highlights.

- Opening hours: Many stores and museums close in the evening (usually around 5-6pm), so be sure to plan your visit and shopping accordingly.
- Saving rules and etiquette: As many of the buildings are old, touching or graffitiing on walls or buildings is prohibited. There are restricted areas, so please follow the instructions. Photography is generally permitted, but please avoid using flash photography inside the museum and touching exhibits. Please refrain from talking loudly as it may disturb others.
- Riverboat:Operations may be canceled due to weather or water levels. If the boat is crowded, you may have to wait to board.
- Feet and clothing:There are cobblestones, steps, and areas that can be slippery when wet, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It's also a good idea to bring rain gear.
- traffic: Please be careful when traveling by car as there are narrow alleys and one-way streets around the scenic area. Be prepared for parking lots to fill up.
