Shugakuin Imperial Villa is a group of villas centered around a strolling pond garden located on the Higashiyama and Shugakuin Plateau in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. Constructed in the mid-Edo period, the three areas of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Imperial Villas are located on hilly terrain, each of which skillfully incorporates teahouses, shoin (study rooms), ponds, waterfalls, artificial hills, and borrowed scenery (a technique of incorporating the surrounding mountains into the garden's scenery). With a garden design that makes use of the natural undulations and appealing seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, snowy landscapes, etc.), it is one of Kyoto's most representative historic gardens. Currently managed by the Imperial Household Agency, tours (guided tours) require prior application as a general rule.

• Nearest station: Eizan Electric Railway, Shugakuin Station, about 10-15 minutes on foot (there are some slopes as the area is hilly).
• Public transportation: Take the Eizan Electric Railway or Kyoto City Bus from central Kyoto (Demachiyanagi and Ginkakuji area), then walk. Please check the specific bus routes and schedules in advance.
• By Car: Parking is limited or visitor parking may be restricted, so public transportation is recommended.

A guided tour of the entire course generally takes about 60 to 90 minutes. If you want to take your time looking around the gardens and buildings, you should plan on spending about 1.5 hours.

• Ginkakuji Temple (Jishoji Temple) and Philosopher's Path: A popular spot in the Higashiyama area. Accessible south from Shugakuin.
• Shisen-do and Manshu-in: This area is dotted with tranquil gardens and temples, and is recommended as a short stroll from Shugaku-in.
• Ichijoji area: Known as a town with many ramen restaurants and other eateries, it is a convenient place to take a break from sightseeing.
• Ohara/Takaragaike area: This is an area where you can enjoy nature and temples, so if you have time, you can go there.
