Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is an international hot air balloon event held every autumn (usually from late October to early November) mainly on the riverbanks of Saga City. It began in the 1980s and has grown into one of Asia's largest events, attracting pilots from both Japan and abroad. It features visually stunning programs such as "Mass Ascent," where colorful hot air balloons fill the early morning sky, and "Night Glow," where balloons are anchored and lit up at night.

Highlights

  • Mass Ascent: In the early morning, dozens to hundreds of hot air balloons float up one after another, creating a spectacular sight. Depending on the weather and wind direction, it is especially impressive in the early morning on a clear day.
  • competition flight: A competition to see who can fly the hot air balloons with the highest accuracy is held. You can see the pilots' skills and teamwork up close.
  • Night Glow (Balloon Fantasia)At night, a show is held in which the balloons are lit up with burners. This show is sometimes combined with music and fireworks, creating a fantastical atmosphere that is different from the daytime.
  • Boarding experience (fee required): Trial flights are sometimes held by advance lottery or on the day of the flight. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the view from the sky (check the official website for availability and application procedures).
  • A diverse international exhibit: You'll never get bored looking at balloons from overseas teams and unique shapes (crazy shaped balloons). There are also plenty of food stalls and merchandise for sale.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: JR Saga Station. Every year, a shuttle bus runs from JR Saga Station to the festival site. The journey time depends on road conditions, but it usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes by shuttle.
  • From the airportFrom Saga Airport (Ariake Saga Airport), it takes about 30-40 minutes by rental car or airport limousine. From Fukuoka Airport, it takes about 1-1.5 hours by train, bus, or car.
  • Access by carTemporary parking lots may be set up around the venue, but they are limited in number and can get very crowded, so we recommend using public transportation or shuttle buses. There may also be free shuttles from the parking lots to the venue, so please check official information.
  • Shuttle buses and special servicesDuring the event, there will be many special shuttle buses running from JR Saga Station and other major points in the area to the venue. The first bus leaves early in the morning, so we recommend checking the timetable and route in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • If you want to watch the simultaneous takeoffs in the early morning, it will take 2-3 hours (excluding travel time), including waiting time at the destination. You can enjoy the view in a short time slot first thing in the morning.
  • If you plan to enjoy the daytime events (exhibits, merchandise sales, and watching the competitions): Half a day to a full day (4 to 8 hours).
  • If you plan to enjoy both night glow and morning takeoff, you should plan to stay all day (morning to night). It gets cold at night, so you'll need to dress warmly.

Nearby spots

  • Saga Castle Honmaru History Museum (Saga City): A facility where you can learn about the history of the Saga domain. Located in the city center, it is about 15 to 30 minutes by car from the venue.
  • Yoshinogari Historical Park (Kanzaki District): A large-scale ruins park from the Yayoi period. Recommended for historical walks (approximately 30-40 minutes by car).
  • Ureshino Hot Springs and Takeo Hot Springs: Perfect for relaxing in a hot spring after the festival. Both are within a 30-60 minute drive.
  • Yutoku Inari Shrine (Kashima City): A beautiful vermilion-lacquered shrine. Although it is a little far away, it is a popular tourist spot (about 40-60 minutes by car).
  • Karatsu (Karatsu Castle and Yobuko Morning Market): This seaside town is a great place to enjoy fresh seafood and visit castle ruins (approximately 50-70 minutes by car).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Easily affected by weather: Hot air balloon rides are often canceled or changed due to wind or rain. Be sure to check the official website or social media for event and flight information.
  • Temperature difference between early morning and night: It gets chilly in the early mornings. Mornings and evenings are especially cold in autumn, so be sure to dress in layers and bring warm clothing.
  • Measures to prevent congestion: The venue and surrounding roads will be very congested. Parking spaces fill up quickly, so we recommend using public transportation or shuttle buses. Arrive early to secure a viewing spot.
  • Safety and Manners:Please follow the instructions of staff around the balloons. Please observe basic etiquette, such as not approaching the balloons when they are inflating or just before they take off, maintaining a safe distance, and taking your trash with you.
  • Pet Drones: Some venues may prohibit pets or drone flying. Please check in advance.
  • Toilets and foodTemporary toilets and food stalls will be set up, but please allow yourself plenty of time as there may be long lines.
  • Photography and tripod:Popular spots will be crowded. Please be considerate when using a tripod so as not to disturb others. Drone photography is generally prohibited.
  • Trial rides and some paid events: Boarding experiences and paid seats may require advance application or a lottery system. If you have plans, be sure to check the official announcement and apply.
